Can't log in to t61p - winlogon.exe issue

Have a brand new t61p . I removed the IBM preinstall and installed XP SP2. Installed all drivers as per the driver page and all Thinkvantage tools (business requirement) and had the machine up and running. Rebooted several times while making small changes and everything seemed ok.

Made a disk to disk copy of the OS using Ghost and suddenly the original copy stops working (while the new copy works fine).

On boot, when I would normally have gotten the prompt for fingerprint or Ctrl+Alt+Del I now get a MS Visual C++ Runtime Library Error:

"Runtime Error!
Program: \??\d:\Windows\system32\winlogon.exe
The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information"

Hitting ok pegs the HDD for 3-5 seconds and then bluescreens with a STOP: c000021A Fatal System Error.

Same thing happens in safe mode, you get the stock windows logon and it doesn't bluescreen, but rather just re-spawns the logon box.

Seems Windows is looking for winlogon.exe in the wrong directory, I'm thinking something to do with the fingerprint reader software.

Has anyone else seen anything similar? Any workarounds? Because rebuilding this thing within my time constraints ain't gonna happen

Thanks in advance.
