Standby/Hibernate Timers not working

Hi guys, noob here needs some help.
First, I'd like to say that this is an amazing site, it has helped me with many problems on my T40 and 60.
Second, I've tried to do due diligence - searched for a relevant thread, but nobody seems to have this exact same problem, strangely enough. If there is a solution out there, please point me in the right direction.
Situation: Standby and Hibernate work fine on my T40 and T60 when I manually select them. However, they no longer work when based on timers. i.e. after 5 minutes, it doesn't go to standby or hibernate. They work fine coming out of S/H.
I am running Windows XP Pro SP 2 on both.
The T60 has 2GB of ram.
Other possibly related problems on my T60. There is a discrepancy when I use the power manager from the control panel - I don't get the full range of default power schemes displayed, though they will be shown when I click on the icon in my taskbar e.g. Timers Off is available from the power gauge on the taskbar, but not from power manager.
Also, I can't define new power schemes. When I run through the whole set-up process, it just doesn't get saved or reflected.
Attempted Remedies:
Uninstalled and reinstalled the thinkpad power management driver and thinkpad power manager.
Tried three times in different sequences. No help.
I was wondering whether it was due to some startup program I had disabled, but I have lpmgr, batlogex and pwrmgrtr enabled.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem? I often fall asleep before turning off the laptop, and it just sits there cooking all day and night.
Many thanks in advance.
