My T60p has a 39T2679 DVD burner from June of 2006. The specs say for mine that it is dual layer.
Most likely yours also is dual layer. To be 100% sure take out the drive and post the part number here.
Oh, also, the only dumb question is the one that is never asked.

Plugging the FRU 39T2829 into the IBM Support site leads to this:
System Service Parts T61/T61p
Buried in the table is the FRU along with a description of the drive, HLDS GSA-U10N. Googling that, you can find this:
Gateway Support, where the specs are given:
# Reads: DVD-ROM, DVD-R (version1.0, version 2.0 for authoring) and DVD-RAM (version1.0)
# Reads and writes: DVD-R (version 2.0 for general), DVD-R DL (Dual Layer), DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+R DL (Dual Layer), DVD+RW and DVD-RAM (version2.2)
# Reads and writes: CD-ROM, CD-ROM XA, CD-I FMV, Video CD, and CD-EXTRA
# Reads: Photo CD (single and multi-session )
# Reads and writes: Standard CD-DA
# Reads and writes: CD-R discs conforming to Orange Book Part 2
# Reads and writes: CD-RW discs conforming to Orange Book Part 3
# Supports read: Super Audio CD (Compatible layer in Hybrid type)
# CPRM (DVD-R/RW/RAM) supported
Of course, this is also denoted by the "DL" (dual layer) you found on the drive

.
P.S. You can also try downloading
DVDInfoPro which
should be able to tell you the capabilities of your optical drive.
