checking status of embedded security chip....(hangs)

I have a T60 WINXP PRO SP2.

Suddenly, when booting, it stalls on the "checking status of embedded security chip...." I have waited as long as half an hour but have not tried leaving it overnight to see if it would finish.

I have searched the forum and have tried without sucess;
- various forms of pressing "esc" while booting and then accessing BIOS to hopefully expose a hidden "clear security chip" option
- I have disabled and deactivated the security chip through BIOS
- I can boot up in Safe Mode but can't uninstall CSS since service is disabled

I can boot from a Windows 2003 Server disk (which is what I am using right now). Any thoughts on how I might work around this problem will be appreciated.

Thanks

Wecome to the forum.

How does your TP behave in safe mode? If it runs OK you could use msconfig to start disabling services, starting with TVTSCHEDULER.

Thanks andyP.

Well your idea led to a partial solution. I was able to run msconfig (great idea) and while disabling services/startups didn't work, through I changed the startup to Diagnostic (through msconfig) and booted Last Known Good Conifuration and that got me in. Then I repaired the CSS software, changed msconfig to normal startup and everything looks normal so far except...I cannot access my secure drive...(had some passwords and other personal info in there).

Any ideas on how to get at the secure drive?

Thanks again for your idea.

Glad to have been able to partially help.
Re accessing your secure drive, basically, I don't know I don't use it. :(
I am prepared to suggest the following, BUT, please allow some time for other forum members to respond before trying it, or at least to say my suggestion is a load of BS and will not work.
Assuming you have tried all possible re-configuration in secure drive itself;
Firstly, back-up everything you can including secure drive if possible.
Secondly, roll-back your installation back to well before your original problem arose.

Good luck

Thanks, I will definitely research your suggestion.

in CCS 8, go to "advanced", "manage security policies", then select "log on to windows". then "disable client security logon interface" this will solve the "checking the status of the embeded security chip" long delay. basically, you just use your regular windows log on password on boot up or restart like everyone else, and the best thing is that ALL the functions of CCs stil operate normally!

Good idea. Tax the server with extra searches when people could just type the utility or software name for those who do not have it all memorized.

Oh, and thanks for the CSS definition.
