OK, I don't have a big problem but some. The initial time it took to boot up the computer was about 10 mins. I thought that subsequent reboots will be faster, and they were, but not by much (2-3 mins boot up)

I also made the mistake of updating ALL my drivers at once AND leaving my notebook unattended for about 1.5 hours. When I came back to it, I had some errors on the screen (the one I remember was with configuration of wireless driver)

Yesterday, I tried to uninstal some programs (MS office, Norton, and some password protection/security programs by IBM). And after the uninstal, I was getting an error message (SQL library...)

So, I decided, since the notebook was still new, to re-do the complete system restore, to the original factory setting.

It took me about 2 hours to do. BUT I noticed that network controller did NOT have a driver installed. I had to go online to find that driver, which I thought was weird. (I mean, should not the notebook leave a factory with all drivers installed?)

At any rate, I have found the driver BUT my boot up is still slow, though I noticed that I get to the screen where my wallpaper is displayed in about 10 sec, and it takes another 20-30 sec for desktop programs to appear and for the processes to stop loading.

here is the annoyance. During the original windows registration, it asked me for a password, and I left the field blank. Now it asks me for a password each time I boot up. I leave it blank and it proceeds, but why does it ask me for a password.

question 1 - HOW do I stop my computer for asking me for a password during boot up?

question 2 - I get the annoying IBM program aksing me to create admin password. I need to cancel it everytime I boot up.

How do I uninstal this program?

To speed up my computer, which IBM softwares can be discarded? I also have Norton AV pre-installed (it appears to be). Though what's weird is that I have AV application, but even though I cancel Norton SetUP, I still get a windows message telling me that my Anti-VIrus is OFF.

Question 3 - how do uninstall Norton, simply from Add/Remove programs?

Question 4 - (last one) - is there a way to return this product to IBM if all else fails WITHOUT restocking fee (since I don't believe I deserve to mess with these issues on a BRAND new machine)? If so, I may consider another notebook by Lenovo but if not, I'll loose my $150 and chaulk it up to bad experience.

To answer number 4:

It is my understanding, after talking to them about some issues I have with my new T61P, that Lenovo will fully refund your money IF it is deemed that the machine is unrepairable. That leaves a lot of grey area with the issues you're speaking of.

See, I don't really want to return my thinkpad. I'd rather keep it, but I'm just surprised that 2GB of Ram, 2G Dual Core chip and 120G 5400 rpm drive makes my notebook run slose than my P4-M, 20G 4200 rpm drive R40.

I am not sure if this is hardware related or software related. I don't seem to have any issues with hardware (no issues yet).

I wonder what is the norm for other T61 owners? Btw, I have win XP pro on my machine.

To uninstall norton, use the Norton Removal tool from Symantec:

My machine has 1gb ram core 2duo 1.6 and a crappy video card but it boots into xp in 30 second, vista in 1 minute. The problem is that you need to disable a lot of unneccessary startup programs. I did a clean install of Vista or XP, installing only drivers and minimize the amount of programs that start up on boot. If you have a Windows Installation CD, use it with the key at the bottom of your machine. Otherwise, restore factory settings and uninstall all unnecessary drivers and softwares from Lenovo. Also, reboot everytime you install a new driver or software. I used to be lazy and install all of them at once before rebooting, and the problems start to appear because some of those installation modify the same files twice and that's not good. Hope this helps

1, 2. I think that's Client Security Solution you're talking about.

Simply go to Control Panel and Add/Remove programs in Windows XP to remove it.

4. All the questions/problems you mentioned are software related and I don't think you would be able to return your machine based on it and get away with restocking fee.

I suggest you perform "Custom Factory Restore" that lets you choose your choice of programs from the "Lenovo Base Software Selector". Obviously you'll have to settle on which programs you need according to your requirement.

To do so:

a. Turn off your machine.
b. Power it up and carefully observe the display. Look for the logo screen. At any time, while the logo screen is onscreen, press Thinkvantage Blue Button or F11.
c. Once Rescue and Recovery Predesktop area fully initiates, you'll see many option on the top and left side of your screen.
d. Under "Rescue and Restore" press "Restore your system".

At some point you'll be presented with custom restore option.

The rest of the process is self explanatory.

doing the custom restore is fairly painfree, so definatly give that a try. that saves a lot of time cleaning off the extra garbage.

and as for the password problem, why don't you want a password? there's a reason they nag you so much to put one on, your laptop is much more secure with one.
