a few questions about the choice of T60 specs

#1 Post by Brandt » Tue Nov 13, 2007 1:41 pm

hi there

been following these forums some time, and now the time has come for me to purchase my first thinkpad! :P
i've almost made my choice, i'm just in need of a bit of advice. i'm going to be using the laptop for studying engineering, meaning heavy math and CAD programs. the 2 models i've looking at are

T60 with x1400

and

T60 with V5250

they both have a T7400, 1400*1050 res, 100Gb sata and the same communication hardware.

the latter has slower RAM, why is that (more importantly, does it matter)?
are the hdd's 7200 rpm (i can't tell)?
do i need more than 2 gigs RAM?
is bluetooth built in?
which of these should i choose (if money isn't a factor)?

i hope someone got a couple of answers for, gotta make a decision sometime tomorrow

Thx in advance.

welcome to the planetwide thinkpad community..

the above CAD comment makes me want to suggest the 20078LG model..

this:
Video RAM std/max: 256MB / 256MB
Graphics chipset: ATI Mobility FireGL V5250
Graphics type: UXGA IPS
confuses me though..

they say IPS UXGA display yet it is NOT.. it is a 1050x1400 display..
if it WERE UXGA IPS (flexview) then that would be the one i would choose..

hard drives are cheap and easily changed..
it IS dumb that lenovo does not show the rotational speed..
or they're hiding that info..
which is important in making your decision..

FWIW, all things being more or less equal, go with the best video..
i.e. 256meg.. the 20078LG model..

the other one has a 120gig hard drive, BTW..
and if i were you in would get a 200gig 7200RPM drive..
and swap out the original drive, once you get the thinkpad you choose..

tempus fugit, got to run.. :?

oki... sounds great! the 20078LG was also gonna be my first choice 8)
my only concern about it is the RAM:
RAM speed supported: 533MHz
RAM type: PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM
the other model uses PC2-5400 instead, will i feel a big difference?

Must definitely be a mistake, only the T43/ps came with DDR2-533, and was never offered with the T60/ps.
Often there are many misprints in their specs... Actually if it came with the V5250 it would be a T60p, not just a T60. So i think it's best to call them to verify :)
