DVI support on Advanced Mini Dock and chipset graphics

Hello,

Lenovo's German site states that the Advanced Mini Dock-Europe together with any T6x, which has the Intel Chipset Graphics Controller X3100, will not support the DVI port.

Lenovo's US site gives the impression that the Advanced Mini Dock together with a T61 that has a 14.1 inch non-wide display (i.e. 3:4) and the Intel Chipset Graphics Controller X3100, will support the DVI port.

This means, that the European version of the Advanced Mini Dock (39T4587) will not support DVI under the conditions outlined above, but the US version (250410U) of the Advanced Mini Dock will support DVI under identical conditions.

Has anyone here tried to use the DVI port on an Advanced Mini Dock-Europe with a T61 that has a 14.1 non-wide display and the Intel Chipset Graphics Controller X3100? If yes - was the DVI port functional?

Thanks

Sounds more like they are confused. I have an R61 widescreen with X3100 graphics and a T60p with ATI discreet graphics. Both work perfectly in the advanced minidock with DVI output to a 20" LCD.

There is no difference between the chipsets on the R61 and the T61, or between wide and normal screen.

Thanks! I suppose i'll just have to try whether the DVI port in the European Advanced Mini Dock will work with the X3100 GMA...

how high does the max. output of the X3100 integrated on the T61 go? I'm about to order a new T61 w/integrated graphics b/c I dont game or anything, but wondering if this is possibly a bad idea? I want to buy my 24" LCD at 1920x1200... (with advanced mini dock)

thanks

2048*1536

One member of this board has a T61 with the Intel Mobile GMA X3100 driving 1920*1200 through the Advanced Mini Dock's DVI port. That user is located in the US, so i suppose he or she uses the Advanced Mini Dock P/N 250410U, which is the version for North America and parts of South America.

Please note that there is no technical difference between so called European version and US version of Advanced Mini Dock. The two FRUs, 39T4587 and 250410U, are only used for marketing purpose.

@ asiafish
Is your R61 a 14" wide version?
As I understand it R6* 15" / 15,4" with ATI X3100 graphics do not support DVI passthrough. The 14" wides do as they have the same BIOS as the Ts.

So, if you have a 15,4" I would be interested to know which BIOS version you have.

These are Max capabilities of your LAPTOP & DOCK. In the end your LCD must support one of the resolutions that you want to DRIVE into the LCD.

For what it's worth, I can confirm that the US Advanced mini dock with a 14.1" standard aspect screen will drive an external monitor through the DVI port. In fact, I'm using a DVI to HDMI cable to drive my 22" HP monitor. It works brilliantly.

Thanks to Erik and some more TP veterans I was able to make the following work:

T61 w NVidia
Adv Mini Dock
Connect via DVI
Gateway XHD 3000 at 2560 x 1600.

Lovely.

Do you have a link to the DVI cable you used?

The max. resolution of the X3100 is 2048*1536 or so, but the advanced mini dock only supports single-link DVI-D. So you cannot push more than 1920 × 1200 @ 60 Hz through the DVI cable. Higher resolutions are only possible via analog VGA!

Myself, I'm using the advanced mini dock + 1680x1050 DVI with no problems. Dock bought in the US. The DVI cable is just the one that came with the monitor.

Then how come crashnburn said he pulled off what he did?

crashburn does have nVidia graphics and presumably a dual-link DVI cable. That's why I would like to know which specific cable he used.

I would assume that any high-end monitor that requires a dual-link DVI cable to achieve its full resolution will actually include such a cable in the box.

Yes. The Dual link DVI Cable came with the Gateway XHD 3000. I got 2560 x 1600 with T61 8992 02U Nvidia with Adv Mini Dock (Thanks to Erik and several other guys who gave me the info to go for this setup).

It also drives 2048 x ..... on the Gateway via the Standard old school CRT cable as well. What was that called again?

I think the Dual DVI Cables are also available on E-bay for 20-30$. I think best would be to get it with Monitor ur getting.

Currently its shipping from USA to India so I can maybe get you the model / cable number once I have it in hand or you can look up Gateways support / site for the Manual and find the Cable number.

Sorry I wasnt around to answer sooner.

np. I wasn't aware that the dual-link cable shipped with the monitor. That's probably all I need to know for now. thx.

You mean the VGA cable?

What I would like to be cleared out is which T60's with Intel GMA 950 support DVI on the dock and which don't. It looks like they added the support somewhere inbetween the production run because reports of both working and not working DVI can be found on the net and on the forum.

If anyone can finally clear this one out, please speak out.

According to the Ltwbook - all of them.

Yes, that's the problem. Ltwbook says that all of them are supported but for example the Advanced Mini Dock site thinks different:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 61297.html

I would trust the Ltwbook before I'd trust other sources, since it has been shown very consistently to have far less errors than any other official or semi-official Lenovo/IBM source.

However, the only thing I can tell you with 100% certainty is that I have a T60 1952, and a Z61t 9440/9443, both of which are late models, with Core 2 Duo CPUs and GMA950, and both of which support DVI. I cannot vouch for other models.

Thanks for the info. I also tend to think like that.

As much as I would like it to be cleared out, what interests me the most, is my T60 of course. It's also a 1952 model. I'm not entirely sure when it was made but the warranty expires in January 2010 so it was probably produced in January 2007, right? Do you think it would support DVI output? Unfortunately I have no way of checking this without buying a dock.

Warranty is based on the date sold, not manufactured. I.e., your Thinkpad was presumably sold in January 2007 with a 3 year warranty. The manufacturing date is on the bottom of the machine next to the serial number: xx/yy where xx is the year and yy is the month.

Thanks basketb, didn't know that.

Mine says 07/01, January 2007 then.

Should the DVI work on this one? What do you guys think?

I decided to dig this thread up because the Advanced Mini Dock page seems to be updated.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-61297

It now sends to this page for more information on availability of DVI pass-through on different ThinkPad models:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-72148

This page has a table that clearly says the DVI is supported on T60 with Intel graphics.

Funny thing is, the table at the bottom of the dock page still says "ThinkPad T60, T60p (14 inch and 15 inch standard)
Note: Integrated graphics models support all docking functions except DVI-D."

I have a T61 with integrated X3100 video card and a Advanced Mini Dock.

The integrated video card support DVI-D, but only up to 1680x1050. It does not support 1920x1200 and above through DVI-D. But D-Sub does.
