Hi,

Just got my new t61 xga today.

When i close the computer and run my hand across the top it feels uneven. I wouldn't say it's bad, but i can definitely feel something like a wire creating the unevenness.

Do i have something to complain about or is this normal for a packed-tight screen?

Thanks in advance.

it could be the magnesium rollcage.

I have the same thing on my 14.1" R61. There is a slight bulge in the middle of the top cover. I can see the unevenness if I look at the top cover at eye level. And I can definitely feel it when I run my hand across the top. When I press on this part I can feel the roll cage underneath.

I've also examined 14.1" R61i's at local Circuit City stores and none of those machines had the unevenness on the top cover, as far as I recall.

This is could be normal, or at least within spec?

I had a T22 previously and it also had this similar unevenness on the top cover, though the bulge on the T22 felt like it was caused by something pushing it from underneath.

But a Z61t that I'd used did not have any unevenness. It was completely flat and very thin and very nice.

So I don't know. To be sure, my R61 looks normal (nothing misaligned, no weird gaps on the cover, LCD normal, and so on) and I'm not concerned about the unevenness on the top cover. To me, this is something I can tolerate.

If you do call customer care about it, please update us; I'd be interested in your outcome.

That could be lcd screw depending on where the bulge is.

A picture is worth thousand words however feeling and seeing are two different things as some of you're.

Obviously you're concerned about your thinkpad quality, the following article is worth a read:
Matthew Kohut wrote:But today I wanted to comment on a specific comment that is unfairly lumped on our latest and greatest, the ThinkPad T60. To see what I mean, close your machine, and then turn it around so that you are looking at the back of it by the battery. Move your eyes down to table level and look the gap between the display and the bottom of the system. You'll see how the display itself actually appears to bow up. The usual comment is What terrible quality. Instead, this is actually a good thing. What we've done is add an arch to the top of the display. When you put pressure on it, it actually flattens out and becomes stronger, much like a good bridge design, or prestressed concrete. This allows a ThinkPad to actually support more weight on the top of the display than it ordinarily could.
Thinkpad T60 and T61 are differently designed based on the same above concept. Read the full article:

It’s a feature, not a defect.
