Appears only Vista supports Intel Turbo Memory. I bought my laptop with WinXP and the Turbo Memory.

Can i use the turbo memory for anything? Or should i just take it out? If i could use it as normal flash memory that would be great. I could put my page file on it or allow photoshop to use it for it's own cache.

But I can't seem to get my computer to recognize it even as a normal disk =(


bonus question for extra points:
Linux (ubuntu) and Intel Turbo Memory ... can they do anything fun?

I envision using the drive for my swap or something like that. Or putting an entine mini distro on it and be able to boot from it alone with no harddrive for extra battery life when i'm on the road. Sexy :0

Does it work exactly like a flash drive? You could use it to back up files.

i can't even get windows xp to detect it. If it worked as a flash drive, i'd be happy with that.

Intel Turbo Memory is only supported on Windows Vista, you cannot utilize it for anything under any other Operating System, be it linux, Mac or any other version of Windows.

Turbo memory is worthless, in my opinion. I would remove it until Vista SP1 fixes its problems, and even then I'd be sure to reasearch it before trying to using it again.

Don't confuse Turbo memory with ReadyBoost, which uses flash memory to cache hard drive information. ReadyBoost may indeed speed up your machine if you have limited RAM.

turbo memory has noticeably made my system 'snappier.' i can def tell the difference because I originally went without even instalilng the turbo memory for a good month since it was causing freezing and bsod. after disabling hybrid power disc in power management and installing turbo memory, my commonly used programs open a lot quicker..and this is with 3gb of ram

Can turbo memory be added later, after one upgrades to Vista?
Is it advisable to get this with a new T61, or not?

If your T61 comes with a 2nd mini-pcie card slot then you should be able to add turbo memory. The 2nd card slot is used for either WWAN or turbo memory card.

This may be a dumb question but don't all T61's come with 2 mini-pci slots?

Try eboostr for XP. It is a new software that brings the turbomemory thing to XP.

Other PCI Express Mini slot is occupied by wireless LAN card.

In reading about eboostr.... I found this statement in one of their release statements...

"Finally, ReadyBoost helps the most to those with little amount of RAM installed, and provides slim benefits to PCs with a gigabyte or more of RAM."

If that's true...

Is that why those of us with newer lappers don't see the Readyboost benefits in Vista?

I don't know, I don't have a fast enough flash drive to test it lol. I have used other software like superspeed RamDisk+ which uses spare memory as cache.

I used to setup 1GB out of my 3GB memory as fast ramdisc and load my application there. Helps a bit definitely as it is RAM.

Wait till i get a fast speed flash disk B-)
