SM Bus Controller

#1 Post by cheapster » Sat Dec 08, 2007 4:20 am

Hi,

I just did a clean XPP install on my T61.

In my Device Manager, I have "SM Bus Controller" under "Other Devices". When I look at the properties window, it tells me the device status... "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)".

I did a search in this forum, and someone had guessed this was the security chip?

I have the security chip disabled in my BIOS.

Any ideas or thoughts about what this controller is?

thanks.

What is your machine type/model? .e.g. T42, 2373-TCU (Found on a sticker on the bottom of the machine)

ok.

So i went to lenovo.com 's support and downloads section trying to find a driver for the intel SMB bus controller. No good search results returned.

I looked for drivers for my system type (8897-CTO), but I don't see anything about SM bus controller.

I already installed the latest Matrix controller software. (not sure if that's it).

I am a bit lost as to what I should be trying to find.

Anyone got ideas?

TIA.

Hi,

I tried the link and downloaded the .EXE for my chipset family.

I ran it and it popped up an error dialog.

"Great!" I thought.

I then wondered what was in my backup copy of SWTools that came with my Vista install. I found this folder called 'Other'.

So naturally, I tried to find any readme.txt's in there... none found.

I went to device manager, and tried an update driver... pointed it to that location... bam.

recognized it as "Intel ICH8 Family Bus Controller"

I guess that means it's properly installed.?.? (I hope).

How to (you'll need to this from a command prompt, on Vista you'll want to right click and run as admin):
The Exe files are located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Lenovo.
Start | run | cmd | CD C:\Program Files\Common Files\Lenovo

1) SM BIOS Service: psainst.exe -install
2) SM Bus Service: i2cinst.exe -install
