T60p VGA output has horizontal jitter

#1 Post by ark » Thu Dec 13, 2007 10:47 am

Widescreen T60, Windows XP SP2.

When I connect the VGA output to an external monitor, the image jumps back and forth (horizontally only) a few pixels randomly, a few times per second.

It does this only on one monitor, so I figured the problem must be the monitor. However, I had the monitor replaced under warranty and the replacement has the same problem. Moreover, the problem does not occur with other computers.

So I am guessing that the horizontal sync is outside the limits that this monitor can accept. Any suggestions for troubleshooting the problem short of sending the laptop back for service?

It's a Planar PX2611W. It claims to be able to automatically adjust for sync.

I think it is the ATI driver.

I had the exact same problem with my T60 on a 24 inch dell LCD. Under Linux, the problem is gone.

Great. So what recourse do I have (aside from waiting for them to get around to fixing the driver)?

I never found the solution. I even installed the latest driver and the problem is still there. I simply use Linux. I wonder if you could get Lenovo to replace the video card with Nvidia.

Hard to believe that's possible. What's worse is that the machine works fine with other monitors by the same manufacturer, so of course they'll say that it's the monitor's problem.

But I've tried it on multiple monitors of the same make and model and the problem appears with all of them.

try searching windows update for a display driver and see if that works any better.

I'm a little nervous about that, because I don't know what to do if I try it and it crashes.

I did look on the ATI website, and found that the driver there refuses to install unless it's on a specific model machine that it recognizes, and the T60 isn't one of them.

There is a driver update available from Microsoft, but it appears to be dated in 2006.
