T61 / T60 docks, USB ports don't work

#1 Post by toy4two » Wed Dec 19, 2007 11:48 am

We are an ThinkPad shop and deploy T60 / T61 / X60 / X61 machines. We have a very high failure rate on the docking stations, people always complain the USB ports don't work. These are brand new docks. I have even returned several to IBM/Lenovo and same problem. Then I have our IBM on site tech come out and replace the system boards, thinking it must be the connector on the bottom of the laptop. Same problem.

My users are frustrated and I am out of ideas.

I saw USB problems are common for the machines itself, but no mention of the docking stations. The fix for my users is just to plug into the computer instead of the dock, thereby defeating the point of the docking station.

Anyone else seeing this in their companies?

I believe there is a design flaw in the USB design of the T60p. I have found that my T60p will not update the BIOS on a Pocket PC, by the USB port. I've been very frustrated by this. I have to use another computer to flash my Pocket PC. (An HTC JasJar)

Not in the IT environment I work in, which has a LOT of T6x Thinkpads and Advanced Mini Docks. Perhaps its something in your SOE that is causing your problems :?:

that is what we are thinking. I have started going through the USB fixes in the previous thread. If I find what is causing it I'll let everyone know and we will have to redo the image we deploy.

The release notes for the latest Bios (2.07) released the other day by Lenovo mentions something about a fix relating to USB issues. Maybe this would help with the problems described in this thread? I don't know, but it would seem to be worth a try.

Summary of changes

Version 7LETA7WW [2.07-1.08]

* (New) Added the new error code 1830 to indicate that a single DIMM is not installed in the memory slot 0. Solution for the error code: With a single DIMM, install the DIMM into the memory slot 0 (a slot different from having used it).
* (Fix) Unexpected interrupts from the USB controller may occur.
* (Fix) The system with NVIDIA graphics chip may cause hang.
