What is your FX570M Driver?

#1 Post by alacrityathome » Wed Dec 19, 2007 2:34 pm

With all the driver sources for the FX570M with the range of results, it would be interesting to post your driver source, driver, INF, and any notable results!

For example, I use the 169.04 driver with the nv4_dsp INF. So, my driver was derived from a forum recommendation which converted the FX570M to a GeForce 8600M GT. Refer to: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthr ... ght=169.04

I get great video and gaming results with: PCDoctor v5 video tests, 3Dmark05, 3DMark06, Crysis, HL2DM, BioShock, C&C3.

Those numbers look very good. Can you mention how those numbers translate to Crysis? Do you visibly see smoother play, high fps. better texture? Any numbers on fps, etc? And, any tradeoff? Did you measure GPU temp via ATI Tools? Thanks for any info. Great performance.

I get about 4820 on 3DMark06 with 169.04 and no overclocking. One more question....do you see the biggest improvement from 169.21 or from the overclocking?

No, you can't get 4800 at stock speed. At most, 3800.

Crysis is playable. Framerate is something like 30 FPS. I went from 800x600 Medium/Low detail to 1024x768 all medium. Before overclocking I had to turn shadows to Low, which was extremely ugly to look at. The resolution upgrade was also important in the overall image quality. Texture & effects are somewhat better. In Crysis, it's all about resolution and shadows.

Overclocking changed my life.

Hey Kel,

I am getting a consistent 4808-4820 on 3DMark06. I have the 250MB FX570M though....maybe that's the difference. Thanks for the OC info.

Just tried 3DMark at stock speed. I get 4200 under XP.
Are you using Vista? Try overclocking your card, I am curious of the results you will get...

Kel,

Yes, I am using XP. Do you think that is part of the score increase?

Did you use ATI Tools to OC?

I will give it a shot.

Alacrity

EDIT: Hmmmm. I guess I have to learn how to overclock. I downloaded ATI Tools, set the 3D GPU and MEM up to higher levels, saved, and loaded the settting. Ran 3DMark06.....and after 30 seconds of play, the PC hangs. So, I either set the OC incorrectly or set it too high. Maybe you can outline your OC process? And I will try your process. In fact, I saw no shading control on ATITools...so you must be using a different process and software?

I use ATi Tool for overclocking and Thinkpad Fan Control to have the fan work at full speed.

The GPU is very stable even at very high speed. I could overclock the GPU upto 740Mhz without crashing, though there were artefacts. My max speed without artefacts is 665Mhz.

Keep us posted

I use drivers from laptopvideo2go.com because those are the only drivers that I can overclock with. Lenovo and Windows Update drivers are Quadro drivers and can't be overclocked.

3999 is my highest on 3dmark06 without overclocking, so 4800 is quite a significant difference. It may be the processor though, because I have a T7500 running at 2.2GHz.

These are great inputs. Now, let me try to find the fan control. I seem to remember a thread saying it is in the BIOS.

Let me try that.

EDIT: Funny, I can't find the ThinkPad Fan Control. Not in the BIOS or as a separate program. I see in some of the threads referring to another software download to get fan control....but not sure. I did run PC Wizard 2008 and it shows the GPU fan on 100% full time. Any advice? Are you referring to the CPU fan control or the GPU fan control or both?

Ahhh, hold on. I see your great thead on the fan control and overclocking. It needs a software download. So, in summary, even though the fan now shows 100%, it will go > 100% with the fan control (and still show 100% on Pc Wizard probably)

alacrityathome: What res are you running to get 4800 3DM06?
That seems very high for stock, not that that's a problem. Much like Estrogen above, I only get 3950-3999 (@1280x1024 /w 169.04) on stock on vista. Even with XP I doubt I'd get 800+ difference on the 2.6Ghz notwithstanding. Just curious.

I don't think I have a choice in resolution during a 3DMark06 (free version) test sequence. It just runs. But, the stock display resolution is 1680 x 1050.

AND.....very sorry about this....I was off by an important digit in my 3DMark06 tests....I had remembered the score incorrectly. I went back and retested after the couple of questions were posted in this thread.

4320 (not 4820) is my 3DMark06 score with: no overclocking, no fan control changes (although it looks like my GPU fan is at 100%), and the 169.04 driver. Still seems pretty good based on the couple of postings in this thread.

With PC Wizard 2008 I get in idle mode:

<<< Voltage, Temperature and Fans >>>

> Hardware Monitoring

>> General Information
SMBus Address : 0x1C60
Support : 6459CTO

> Voltage CPU : 1.25 V

>> General Information CPU

ACPI Thermal Zone #1 : 50 °C
ACPI Thermal Zone #2 : 49 °C

> Video Monitoring : nVidia Driver

> GPU Temperature : 55 °C

So, don't get excited......Lenovo did not improve the T61p since you bought yours!

ok 4320 makes much more sense. The 2.6>2.2Ghz can be accounted for with that difference.
But I would recommend tpfancontrol if you plan to overclock the 570M. 100% fan speed doesn't mean its running on hi and that's the beauty of tpfanctrl. Its like overclocking your fan's rpm. But as I found out I'll have to use XP to use it. Can't get it to work on Vista 64 :(

Alacrity, I have the exact same CPU and GPU as you, basically I have the same laptop, except I have 4 gigs of RAM instead of 2.

I never got that high of a 3Dmark score though. Maybe the higher score is because of Windows XP instead of Vista?

badblood,

Thanks for your recommendation. To overclock, would you say the fan must be >100%? I attempted an overclock earlier today without increasing the fan and the PC froze after 30 seconds. Maybe I need to read the ATI Tools PDF a little bit more closely.

By the way, the only advantage I have heard of so far with Vista is that Directx10 is supported by Vista.....although not too many games run at the DirectX10 level. I assume that XP will, at some point, be able to handle DX10?

I spent a week agonizing on choosing XP or Vista for my new T61p......and am very happy with the choice of XP. Very smooth, very stable, very fast (reviews say that SP3 for XP will increase the speed further by 8-10%).

Its best I refer you to the official thread for tpfancontrol. the author, Troubadix is a frequent poster there and the latest version is in his sig.

Without going into the technical, here's my loose interpretation which might or might not be entirely accurate:
Without tpfancontrol the fan is controlled by thinkpad bios and basically using temp values from the various thermal zone sensors it'll adjust the fan speed accordingly. At its highest it only goes to a certain rpm ( I forgot whatthat is). Thing is the fan is capable of even higher speeds and tpfancontrol basically unlocks those higher speeds ( which can be adjusted in the .ini file) allowing the machine to run at safer temps when the GPU is overclocked.

Get the TPFC 0.25 beta. It installs as a service or smth. The important thing is to get the fan at max speed (64) when the GPU is overclocked.

I have changed my settings and here are my latest and optimal settings (fancontrol.ini).

Code: Select all

Active=2
Cycle=5
MinimizeToSysTray=1
MinimizeOnClose=1
StartMinimized=1
IconLevels=55 65 70
FanBeep=0 0
MaxReadErrors=0
ShowAll=0
Level=45 0
Level=50 2
Level=55 5
Level=60 7
Level=65 64
The fan goes to max speed only when I play 3D games. Otherwise, it remains pretty silent as other TP. Max speed with TPFC is 4500RPM (64) whereas BIOS controlled fan speed is only 3400RPM (7). The temp does not go higher with OCing with max fan speed than with default stock speed settings.
It's funny to see that TPFC was initially made because TP were too loud and now it's used by T61p owners for overclocking. :D

Further to Pocket's question, I am assuming that to go into overclock mode, you actually have to load the OC profile into ATI Tools each time you go into a 3D intensive game?

When your turn off the PC, the GPU reverts to the default clock settings on the next boot?

The automated fan setting would be nice, though. Only goes into the 100% + setting when you go into gaming......but the full fan settings start at boot up?

Thanks,

For TPFC: If you have the 0.25 beta version, it loads itself at startup. With the 0.18 version, you have to create a shortcut in the startup folder and make sure it loads minimized (use my settings and everything should be OK).

Now with ATi Tool, you have to go into settings > startup. I would advise you load ATi Tool via startup folder instead of the registry key. Then also load the profile you want at startup (I have an Overclock profile). Make sure only the "3D perf." has the overclocked settings. Don't touch to "3D low power" nor "2D" settings. Then you are set.

One thing to look for when you overclock besides temps is to make sure powermizer still works. I found with 169.04 it disabled powermizer but on 169.21 it didn't affect powermizer at all i.e. GPU clocks revert back to low power settings soon as I exit a 3d game to desktop.

On a side note does anyone have a working tpfc for vista 64 bit? or am I out of luck?

Then also load the profile you want at startup (I have an Overclock profile). Make sure only the "3D perf." has the overclocked settings. Don't touch to "3D low power" nor "2D" settings. Then you are set.

Kel,

Ok. Still learning. Results or observations so far:

..couldn't immediately locate the 0.25 Beta
..used 0.18 initially
..then used 0.31 Beta
..on fan control manual, i can see a direct relationship between the levels and the increased sound of the fan
..of course as far as I can see, putting "64" in the manual does not do anything....is that correct?
..I run fan control in the tests below in SMart mode.
..I run 3DMark06 with no overclocking but with the fan control. No difference in score. Shouldn't the score improve with the higher fan settings even without overclocking?
..I run 3DMark06 with OC settings of 600/900 and with fan control. PC freezes after xx seconds. But, I never hear the fan come on strong before that happens.
..so, the fan may not yet be kicking in OR I am getting into the graphics mobo issue (I have 2x 1GB RAM).
..without fan control and without OC, I can play all the games (Bioshock, Crysis, C&C3, HL2DM)....which makes me think I still haven't mastered the fan yet.

Will take a rest from the testing....but if you have any inputs, please let me know.

And, if you could show a web site for the 0.25 download.

Many thanks so far...

1st EDIT: For manual level setting for the 0.31 Beta, if I plug in 64, it looks like a max setting of 40 comes up.

[12/20/2007 4:00:57 PM] Manual: Set fan control to 0x00, Result: OK
[12/20/2007 4:01:05 PM] Fan: 0x00 / Switch: 53°C (53; 41; 32; 52; 34; 0; 30; 0; 34; 43; 47; 0;)
[12/20/2007 4:01:05 PM] Manual: Set fan control to 0x05, Result: OK
[12/20/2007 4:01:21 PM] Fan: 0x05 / Switch: 52°C (52; 41; 32; 50; 34; 0; 30; 0; 34; 43; 47; 0;)
[12/20/2007 4:01:21 PM] Manual: Set fan control to 0x07, Result: OK
[12/20/2007 4:01:34 PM] Fan: 0x07 / Switch: 51°C (51; 41; 31; 50; 34; 0; 30; 0; 34; 43; 47; 0;)
[12/20/2007 4:01:34 PM] Manual: Set fan control to 0x40, Result: OK

And, the rpm shows 3330 at a manual setting of "64" and a tabular setting of 0x40

2nd EDIT: Yeah!!!!!!!! Finally made some progress.

...put fan control 0.31 Beta on manual
...set fan to 64 and fan ramped up to 4500rpm
...put ATI Tools over clock at 507/804
...kept fan on 4500 rpm for entire test
...started 3Dmark06 Test
...during the gpu tests, gpu temp was 62-66 C
...final 3DMark score = 4660

So, progress has been made. Now if I can link the smart mode to the fancontrol I may be home free.

Cover me, I am going back in!

hey, i started that business, too

tpfc works and 4500rpm kick in at what I set to 61C there

downloded the 169.17 driver from laptopvideo2go

3dmark06 gives 4056

played around with atitools, but seems I cannot get it to do anything? if I move the sliders, and I set immediate effect upon slider movement in the sttings, i dont see for example the FPS going up in the rotating cube. also, the fps of the cube does not slow down either when I set a very low closck speed of the 3d. if I set the also the middle-pair slider does not move beyond 475/700, and the right slider-pair is not adjustable at all. in short, how does atitool work?

i would like to replicate the result posted in the other forum of a 3dmark06 of about 5600.

did you set the tpfc on manual?

is that without the tpfc?

don't use the first two pairs of sliders (2d & xx). just use the 3d. click on settings and set readust after setting sliders. start new clock. move 3d sliders, load.

run
