Do T6x's with Flexview and support for 4GB RAM exist?

Hello again. Do T6x's with Flexview AND true support for 4GB's RAM exist?

After reading the sticky, my hunch is no, but is there a work around?

Perhaps upgrading the processor and chip set when I go to Vista SP1.

Yes they exist. There is no way to change the chipset of any Thinkpad notebook. If your laptop came with a Core DUO, then it can be upgraded to a Core 2 Duo. This will allow it to run a 64 bit operating system. The issues lies within the 32 bit version of Windows XP. It cannot see above 3GB of RAM due to design constraints. It has to do with memory reserved for hardware management.

In order to really understand what is happening here, you will have to do some research.

Let me clarify a bit. Lenovo has never sold a T6X with flexview AND support for 4GB's RAM. Correct?

In other words, T60's don't truly support 4GB since they can't address more than 3GB of memory, no matter which OS is on them. Most T61's can support and use 4GB's of RAM, BUT they were not available with FlexView display.

So what you are proposing it to take a T60 Core Duo, and the upgrade it to Core 2 Duo, which would allow it to address 4GB's of RAM.

As a side note, I think I read earlier today on this forum that T60's Core DUO can run 64 bit, but they can't use all 4GB's RAM. 3GB's is their max.

Core Duo's are 32 bit no matter what. You are right too by saying that the T60 does not support 4 gb of ram. This is a hardware limitation.

There were Core 2 Duo T-60's manufactured with Flexview.

I seem to recall reading on this forum that all 15" T-60's with SXGA+ or UXGA LCD's were flexview.

As far as 4GB RAM, that is a chipset limitation that was fixed with the SantaRosa platform in the T61's. The previous generation (Napa) in the T60's only supports 3GB max (contrary to what some manufacturers advertised). So, the bottom line is no, there were no Core 2 Duo T60's with Flexview LCD's that supported 4GB RAM with a 64 bit OS installed.

LENOVO t61p with the 2.4Ghz fx570 video card will not take 4gb of ram when it does there is too much power consumption and the unit powers off.

The video card in conjunction with the dule chanel ram will draw a lot more then 90watts (lenovo powersuplly) and thus power off the laptop.

However if you run ONLY single chanel ram then it will not power off.

What a joke!

The design team was out to luch on that one.

If you researched your complaint, you would find that many people with the problem you describe, which only affects SOME T61p's, have had their units successfully repaired under warranty by Lenovo.

So there is no way to buy a T6x T6xP with a Flexview display AND memory support that truly addresses 4GB's RAM? The sticky and Harryc haven't let me down yet, so I am leaning with his resounding no.

Is there a way to upgrade a Flexview T60/ T60p to the ability to support 4GB's RAM? Is a chip set upgrade (Napa to Santa Rosa)

I took the stats below from another thread. It appears to sum-up the models that I am looking for, and not looking for.

Non-flexview:
All 14.1": XGA (1024x768), SXGA+ (1400x1050), 15" XGA (1024x768), All widescreens (both 14" and 15.4")

Flexview:
15" SXGA+ (1400x1050), UXGA (1600x1200)

Core Duo:
T60: LCD: 15" SXGA+ (Flexview)
T60p: LCD: 15" SXGA+ (Flexview), UXGA (Flexview)

Core 2 Duo:
T60: LCD: 15" SXGA+ (Flexview)
T60p: LCD: 15" SXGA+ (Flexview)
There were very FEW select models for the C2D with 15" UXGA flexview, but these seem like a special order only.

Harryc, thanks again for the product number of a T60 with Flexview. If anyone else has a Flexview, that has a model number different than T60 2007-7KU, please let me know what it is. I am on the hunt!

That machine will NOT support 4GB of RAM, which was at the crux of the OPs question.

No T60 will support 4GB of RAM. EVER. PERIOD.

To get Flexview and 4GB of RAM, your ONLY option is to get a T60 w/ a Flexview LCD, and then transplant a the motherboard from a T61 14" (note, not 15 or 15.4") computer into it. That's it.

And as crappy as Nvidia drivers have been with Vista, that is not something I would consider, personally, for a LONG time.

And for the record I never stated or claimed it supported 4 GB of ram, I simply attempted to answer the last question asked. It is interesting to note that Vista does see 4 GB of ram in it with Service Pack 1.

I remember reading here on the forum that a member has done exactly what brentpresley suggested in his post...and would tend to believe that it's the only way to go about this issue...

As much as I love FlexViews, I doubt I would ever take that route, but to each his own...especially for the fact that I'm allergic to Vista.

The model numbers of T60's are helping me track down T60's T60p's with Flexview on the web. I realize that the T60's don't fully support 4GB RAM, they can only see it and dual-channel it depending on the operating system installed. There is a great sticky about this.

So can a T60 Core Duo Napa or Core 2 Duo Napa be upgraded with Santa Rosa Chip Set?

No, newer processors connect to the motherboard via Socket P as contrary to the Socket M of the former models, chipset is different as well.

You can put a T61's motherboard (the 14" non widescreen one) into a T60's chassis (14" or 15" non widescreen) so you will have both Flexview and 4 GB memory. All ports are the same. It seems very doable.

I will be doing this as soon as I can fine a REASONABLY PRICED T61p 14" non-WS motherboard.

Future upgrades for the little toy in my sig (all to be done in 1st 1/2 08):
T61p motherboard
X7900 CPU
QXGA LCD (more research needed on this one first)

You may want to learn Chinese for the last (and IMO, most interesting) part of this deal, because the only article I've ever seen on performing this from someone who has actually done it was in Chinese and the pictures were not really helping much...

Brent, to install that QXGA panel, I think you need to replace your T60p's display assembly (which is too thin) with the R50p's (which is thick enough). Are you sure you want to do that?

I'm patiently waiting for availability of the 14" mobo for the same upgrade. I sometimes purchase performance car parts in group buys, it would be nice to rally those of us waiting on this mod, and a supporting dealer, for a group buy

Given that LCD assemblies differ between T60 and T61, I doubt that you'd be able to get away with something like this, not that I've tried it myself.

Doubtful. Last time I checked there were no 15" T61 laptops. Makes it kinda hard to wedge in a 14" 4:3 or a 15" WS.

PW - I know you have done this upgrade on the R5x series. Why is the assembly too thin on the T60 for the QXGA? Is the panel thicker?

Yes it is. That's why it has never been offered as a T42p/T43p upgrade.

The article in Chinese I've been referring to says something (this is from pictures, I do not speak/read/write the language in question) about surgery-think cutting out pieces and putting them back- on the lid...sounds like a messy job...not that it's going to scare you from performing it...
