Hello Folks,
Merry Christams to all. I recently bought Thinkpad T61 15" (Nvidia Graphics) with Model # being 6459CTO. I bought it with basic 1 DIMM 1 GB memory and now wanted to upgrade it with after market memory.
My memory config. are PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (1 Dimm) . I was browsing through multiple sites like newegg.com , laptopmemoryupgrade, crucial, kingston etc... I was looking to buy 2 GB ( 1 Dimm) for the other empty slot. (1 + 2 GB = 32 GB on Vista Business 32 bit)
I was hoping that some you experts out there can recommend me on a specific brand/make based on your experiences. I dont mind paying little more as memory would be one of the key aspect for this workhorse.
Thanks in advance,
Sam

I have been using Crucial 2GB modules in the T61 here for 3+ months without any issue. I only use Crucial and Kingston memory modules in my laptops and they never disappoint.

Is it okay to mix memory brands or do you just have to match speeds (especially when considering dual channel)?

It's okay to mix brands. You get dual channel as long as the memory types (i.e. capacity, speed and CAS latency) are identical. The OP wants to have 1GB+2GB, so s/he won't be getting dual channel, but that's okay because 3GB without dual channel is better than 2GB with dual channel anyway.

Just out of curiosity. Who makes IBM's RAM?
I have seen the brand Kingston on a lot of IBM / Lenovo RAM over the years. Do they make the bulk of lenovo's RAM?
OP. I have never had a problem with Kingston RAM

No one.
Memory is outsourced and then co-branded so are numerous components in your thinkpad.
Dual channel provides almost negligible increase in performance.
OCZ and Corsair are other nice brands to consider.

Hello All,
First of all thanks everyone (Suzo, fparisi, ryengineer) for the quick response. Really appreciate it. It was a big help.
After reading the suggestions, I could narrow it down to Kingston / Crucial. I went to newegg to look for the T61 memory . That actually popped up question for newbie like me.
1) New egg showed multiple 2 GB (PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM) ) from Kingston ...
a)
KVR667D2S5/2G - Found also at Kingston website(
link)
b )
KVR667D2SO/2GR ( Couldn't find at Knigston website under DDR2 PC2 5300 category but found in Google)
2) When I went to Kingston website to find memory using Manufacturer (lenovo) and System ( Thinpad
T61 6459-XXX), the only 2GB DDR2-667 Module it brought was Part #
KTL-TP667/2G.
I am geting little confused here

because of my inexperience probably. Would appreciate if experts out there can advise me on which specific above Kinston part # to buy OR any of the above would be just fine and its just me
Thanks as always,
Sam

Of the two you list, "a)" is the system-specific Kingston memory for Lenovo and "b)" is the "value-ram" Kingston memory not specific to any one manufacturer.

FYI
I picked up a 2 gig piece of ram for my T-60 at the Kingston site last week on a really great special holiday price for $54.00 including delivery. I had the ram in two days............
By the way, it's NOT the value ram...............
When I did a search for the ram, I came across this ram the first time for about $79.00, however, I searched several other ways at the Kingston site and was able to locate it at the special pricing.
In the event you are interested and can't locate this pricing, please PM me and I will spend some time and try to locate it again for you, that is if it's still being offered.
Hope this helps........
Best to one and all, Steve

I bought the KTL-TP667/2G from Kingston direct and it has on the packaging: "Equiv. LENOVO P/N 73P3847".
I have no problems using this memory in my T61P 6459CTO/ bios 1.26. I have this memory along with a 1G P/N 40Y8403 that came from the manufacturer to give me 3G total.
