Matshita UJ-842 - Can't burn CDs?

would this be a bad drive or something? I got a T60 and the guy gave me a DVD burner to replace the CDRW/DVD drive that came with it (so now i have both). I was burning some CD ISOs of recovery discs and couldn't with that drive but i can with the other and the CDRW/DVD from my T42.
I can however burn the DVD ISOs and i can burn the CD ISOs to DVD-R/+Rs instead but just not CDs, gives the following error in Nero 8.X.X.X:
Illegal block size for command
Anyone else get this error (yes i googled)
The drive was manufactured in Feb 2007 (system was bought around march also) Would it still be covered under it's own warranty since it didn't come with the system?

Is DLA or Nero InCD enabled? Have you tried any other software utility other than Nero?

No DLA, i used the Windows built in burning stuff and that failed too - no error of-course.
I didn't use anything else but i figured it's the drive since i can burn DVDs with it no problem and with the other 2 CDRW/DVD combos i have they burn CDs fine also.

How did you install Nero? It may have installed InCD by default. CDBurnerXP is free and works well for the basics which include burning .iso files.

You could also try
burn4free (
http://rbytes.net/software/burn4free-review/) This site also contains links to other related burning software - some free and some not etc.
If you suspect the drive to be faulty and are thinking of shelving it for another, as a last ditch attempt try searching for a firmware update for the Matshita UJ-842 (If you do find one - there is great risk that it may completely render the drive useless).
Good luck.

ok well i tried CDburnerXP and got this:
Device error:(339973)
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/3484/24843972wx8.jpg
This is at 24X so i tried lowering it and it didn't work. Then i thought maybe try another brand and now i'm using Sony ones (before was Imation and TDK 52X ones) and it's burning at 8X. I'll try 24x next to see.
So hmm, Sony ones seem to work fine. burning ISOs at 24X (well actually only got up to 16X (CAV) before it finished (small ISO, 251MB) I burned it with Nero too so i guess it was just being picky with the type of discs.
Imation - BAD
TDK - BAD
Sony - GOOD
good thing i don't burn that many CD-Rs. Geeze.

My!
I have had the exact problem, the exact drive, albeit a little different. I could write CD ISOs to DVDs without error, but no CD burning any whatsever.
I am a bit relieved to see that media might be a soultion, but I've been using the laptop for two years, and for 1.5 years it has burned ANY brand of CDs at maximum (24X) speed.
Why give up on CDs now? In 2 ours the shops will open and I am going to check with a Sony CD...
