hard disk behavior

#1 Post by ShadowRider » Fri Jan 04, 2008 11:00 am

I tried to use the thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery utility to make a backup. This is the only application running but I keep getting 'file x is in use or corrupt' error messages on files. If I select retry it continues with no other issue for that particular file but will stop on another within a few seconds.

I stopped the process after several hours when I was only 15% done and had retried many times on various files.

This make me suspect my hard disk is not working properly. However, both the BIOS HD diagnostics and PC doctor report no errors.

Any suggestion as to what the issue may be?

Or perhaps Rescue and Recovery is not. But if you believe it's your HDD then go to the following thread and download a utility corresponding to your HDD manufacturer to run another fitness test:

Hard drive utility links.

ShadowRider: Are you backing up to your main drive? if so, try backing up to a CD or DVD to see if that works.

I wonder if the Rescue and Recovery software has somehow become corrupt?

I originally tried to backup to the local drive but there was not enough room.

The current failures are when backup up to USB hard drive.

I finally got through an entire backup. (may times selecting retry).

I found the bottom of the laptop got very very hot (could not leave it on the lap)

I ran the Hitachi Drive Fitness and it did not report any issue. I wonder if RR pushed the drive harder then the diagnostics, or if the heat buildup needs to accumulate before issues arise.

Are these drives known to get this hot under normal operations?
