Hard vs Soft Volume Control??

I know this is an odd thing to complain about, but it kind of annoys me. On my old T42p, the volume buttons seemed to control the actually speaker volume, as if bypassing the OS (it seemed to work while the OS was booting).
However, on my T61p, the volume buttons don't exactly function the same way. They seem to be somewhat application dependent. For instance, when I'm using MPC, using the volume button moves the volume slider within MPC up and down rather than adjusting speaker volume. I would have to click the taskbar before I could raise the volume. Also, when I play some games, the volume buttons don't work at all. Is there some way to get the buttons to function like they used to?
