My experience with "Error 25013: Error obtaining the Rescue and Environment drive letter"
Model: T60P 2007FE2
System: WinXP (sp2, off-the-restore partition)
RnR version onboard: 3.01 (off-the-restore partition)
Partition structure as in MBR:
1 NTFS, System
2 Extended (7 drives)
3 Free space
4 RnR service partition
System setup was done after the extended partition was created, so one can assume RnR could have detected it and store information about it.
First of all I attempted RnR upgrade to 4.2 (
tvtrnr42_1016en.exe, downloaded directly from lenovo support page) and failed (Error 25013). After reading some threads I
1. uninstalled RnR 3.01 (Ctrl Panel> add/remove programs), the problem persisted
2. decided to use IBM MBR fix tool
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... 31_rrd.exe
the problem persisted, so I assume that might be unnecessary
3. investigated RnR 4.2 installer actions.
Observations: Installer UNHIDES service partition and attempts to map to drive Z: or ANY pre-Z letter, it seems in the latter case it is not possible to install RnR 4.2
So we MUST free-up Z: letter
It seems that it also utilizes some ramdrive, mapped to pre-last free drive-letter, in case pre-last letter (Y) is already assigned to some drive - the instalation will never succeed.
So we MUST free-up Y: letter too
Now it seems, that on first run of installer only drive Z: is assigned to service partition, no assignments to Y, we crash with 25013. No problem, we run once again the installer, this time Y should be mapped too. If the installer crashed again - we re-run it once more and this time we should succeed.
Hope this spares somebody some effort.
