Should I return my T61p? Help..

Hi -

I have a brand new T61p - nothing has been done to it (no customization). When I turned on my system, I periodically got the error message "Error 0192 - Embedded Security hardware tamper detected". Tech support couldn't really help and apparently the manual says "replace motherboard". They did that but I have seen the message one time since (usually it happened when I was running on battery power and the indicator said there was less than 15% left).

In addition, the hard drive makes a periodic "clunk" noise - almost like the head is being parked forcefully. I have not been able to further identify under what conditions this happens.

After a lot of arguing, Lenovo is prepared to replace the unit (that's a whole other story), but my issue is this: what do I do if I go through the replacement process (pain in the #@!!) and then find that the replacement machine has bad pixels, worse problems, etc.

Any information you might have to help me decide would be greatly appreciated - Thanks so much!

sf,

doesn't sound quite right....and it should be for a new purchase.

get a replacement. i think Lenovo went thru a quality dip recently....and hopefully, a new PC will set things right.

"i think Lenovo went thru a quality dip recently"

I know your not being serious !

How are were, the people who spend our hard earned money on equiptment that we trust will do what is expected of it. How are we to trust in a company who has in your words "i think Lenovo went thru a quality dip recently". REALLY NOW !

Maybe the time has come for us, the cunsumer to look elseware for notebook computers where quality control and customer service is on the up-swing............ Have we gone over the top here, treating ThinkPads as something that they are no longer....... A quality piece of equiptment.

I sit here day after day, week after week, and month after month, only to read one horor story after the next. This so called dip in quality control seems to be more then a short lived issue. How long and how many peope should become stuck with a poorly manufactured piece of plastic.

My 2 cents

I agree. Not only do I read one T61/p complaint after another on various forums, such as this one, but Lenovo is 0 for 3 with three buddies of mine who purchased T61's and none of them are happy at all. Everything from clunky hard drives to blue screen errors (upon turning on for the first time lol), to the poor screen quality with uneven colors to one guy telling me "I think my screen might fall out. It's kinda wobbly."

And no UXGA in 4:3 format, well, actually no WUXGA either, unless you call a "special" number and wait 3 months. I don't want to switch when the time comes to replace my unit, which won't happen for at least two years thankfully.

Oh well...anybody know what this TruBrite/PixelBright/Hi-Brite is, that Toshiba, Sony, and at least one other use? How does it compare to Flexview?

That's not true... Mine has WUXGA and shipped in 3 days. No need to call any number.
Lenovo's shipping time is very good nowadays.

3 days? Really? That's good to know. I guess they got some new WUXGA's back in stock. I'd like to get a widescreen laptop. Did you get an LG LCD? They seem to be noticeably better than any others? I want to buy my dad one for his birthday next month. Quick question: I see you're in Portugal. Does Lenovo ADD VAT taxes to the purchase amount or is it included?? When you buy a computer locally, the VAT is always included in most cases. Is it the same with Lenovo?

The point

Thanks very much for your responses. I'm not quite sure if the consensus is to exchange the item or keep it, thinking that I won't get one that is actually worse. Final thoughts?

I can assure you that you will be satisfied with LG LCD. I have one myself and the color reproduction is just fantastic although the viewing angle is a little bit bad with some light leakage at the bottom.

I have to agree that build quality of Lenovo has gone down recently. My T61 is not as stable as my T60: heavier, more BSOD due to BIOS issue, lousy driver support, more lockup and freezes.

IBM/Lenovo is a large corporation and sometimes, stuff happens. I say, get a replacement notebook. It'll be highly unlikely that you'll have the same problems.

Give Lenovo a chance to fix the issue.

Now, don't get me going on cell phone companies because they ALL suck - big time, but I digress...
