Question about changing out my HD

I'd like to change out the HD from my T60 to a Hitachi 7K200 that I just got. At the same time I got a copy of Acronis True Image 11 and a WD external HD. I want to swap out my current HD for the Hitachi and use the True Image and external HD to back up everything.

Does the following sound like what I need to do, in this order?

-Install the Acronis software on my laptop
-Plug the external HD into my laptop and ghost the laptop's current HD onto the external HD
-remove the HD from my laptop and install the new one
-restore the ghosted image from the external HD onto the new HD on the laptop?

Is it that simple?

Yep, that simple. I suggest you do a good solid defragmentation before making the Acronis image. That way the fragmentation will not be carried over to the image. Imaging is done sector by sector, thus the fragmentation is imaged, too.

If you like to defrag from the command line, also do a "defrag c: -b" to trim up the prefetch folder, too. (hidden, "secret" command- yes, it's legit!)

I've discovered that Acronis 11 may or may not be compatible with Acronis version 10, but if you only have 11 that will not be a problem for you.

After you are done, be sure and create the bootable CD in Acronis. It's necessary to use that if your hard drive becomes unbootable and you would not be able to get to Acronis out of Windows to restore the image. The Acronis bootable CD is simply Acronis with the ability to boot off the CD instead of a unbootable drive.
