Can't install Vista update KB930979 via System Update on T61

Hello,

ThinkVantage System Update shows "Windows Vista Update Module KB930979 32bit" for my T61 with Windows Vista Ultimate, but every time I tell it to apply the update, the update fails--it downloads without incident but System Update ultimately states:
System Update has finished updating your system.

Results from this session: 1 Package did not install.
System Update still shows the update as available. I tried downloading the update manually from Microsoft and this also returned an error message, although I don't recall the exact error message offhand.

The update states that it fixes the following issue:
930979 You may receive a "Stop 0x0000007E" error message after you enable the BitLocker Drive Encryption feature in Windows Vista
Does anyone know why the update won't install? I do not have BitLocker Drive Encryption enabled. Will this update only install if that is enabled?

Just curious more than anything else!

One thing you might try to check is whether that particular update has already been installed on your system, perhaps automatically by windows update. If you click on windows update in control panel, somewhere on the dialog box that pops up is an option to look at installed updates. You can click that and look to see if that particular update has already been installed. If so, no need to worry about it.

Perhaps the particular update is not required by your Widows, I got the same result when I tried to install Nero related Knowledge Base when my thinkpad had no Nero product installed.

I checked the list of installed updates in Windows Update, as pae77 suggested, but the update isn't shown there.

Like I said, I'm not really worried about this but I thought I'd see if anyone else had had the same experience with this update.

Thanks!

I've experienced the same thing every now and then. Sometimes it will work at a different time. I currently have one critical update which has twice failed installation through System Update. I looked (well, glanced really) at the already installed updates and I didn't find it.

Also, the Microsoft January "Must-Have"'s include two, one of which was installed by Windows Update, and the other had already been installed.

The fix for KB930979 will be inculded in VISTA SP1, if you wish to wait. If you want to move forward (for now), and are comfortable doing so, and have NOT enabled the BITLOCKER feature:

1) Go to CONTROL PANEL and open up the PROGRAMS & FEATURES entry
2) Select installed updates
3) Look for HOTFIX KB929637. This actually fixes the problem that KB930979 intends to address. However, it also keeps KB930979 from installing. This fix was probably installed by WINDOWS UPDATE.
4) Select/highlight KB929637 and click on UNINSTALL. This will take several minutes.
5) VISTA will want to re-boot when this completes. So, re-boot.
6) Re-run the LENOVO system update.
7) The fix for KB930979 should be called out. Select this and install it. (BTW ... KB930979 actually installs the code for KB929637; this also satisfies WINDOWS UPDATE.)
8) VISTA will want to re-boot again when this completes. Re-boot.
9) Re-check the LENOVO system update. KB930979 should no longer be called out as an applicable fix, since it should now be installed correctly (by step 7).
10) Try WINDOWS UPDATE. Hopefully you won't see anything unexpected.

Note that there are several other fixes that LENOVO ships that have the same problem ... fixed by MICROSOFT with some other fix number. Check the MICROSOFT support web site; you should be able to find these.
