WHo makes T61p DVD burner?
WHo makes T61p DVD burner?
Hi,
Does anyone know what make DVD writer Lenovo is using now. I have a T61p on order.
The DVD part number is:
42V8172 SBB DVD REC.8XMAXDUAL LAY UB-S
IBM has used:
Hitachi-LG Data Storage Inc. GSA-4083N
Hitachi-LG Data Storage Inc. GSA-U10N (IDE/ATAPI)
Panasonic / Matshita UJ-842
Panasonic / Matshita UJ-852
I am hoping that the - 42V8172 SBB DVD REC.8XMAXDUAL LAY UB-S - is not the Matshita.
Thanks for any help.

What are the FRU / ASM part numbers on the drive it-self.
T60F: (Integrated Intel GPU) - [Another T60 FrankenPad!...Different approach]

My issue is very specific. I am currently using a laptop with a Matshita DVD drive and I cannot "rip" my DVD movies for ipod (or other) use. The Matshita drive locks on one "movie" region and thereafter can not see any other regions. This is only a problem if you have DVD movie's from different regions as I do. I am not aware of any performance issues with the the Matshita.Proteus wrote:Just curious..since I have a choice..
Whats wrong with the Matshita burners?
I thought all NEW dvd drives have to be set initially to a region before they can be used - hence locking them to a region (?) - Therefore when your new T61p arrives the dvd drive will need to be set to a region (regardless of manufacturer).Highland wrote:The Matshita drive locks on one "movie" region and thereafter can not see any other regions. There maybe software to get round your problem or even firmware solutions to make the drive region free.
EDIT: You are allowed 4 region changes from the initial region setting - then the drive will be locked.

In my experience Matshita (aka. M a t s u s h i t a, Panasonic) laptop optical drives tend to be overly sensitive to operating temperature with both the laser unit and the spindle motor failing in just a few short months of *cough*heavy*cough* use.
That's why I prefer reading and writing stacks of CDs and DVDs with an external USB optical drive. It's way less expensive and way faster in the long run.

Perhaps you want to try Free DVD which removes the region code. AnyDVD does this as well, but it costs $$$.

A good solution, but remember that many of the newer DVD players (esp. Sony) will not play a DVD if it was recorded region-free. Only matters if you watch it on your TV...
