Upgrading T61 to support bluetooth?

#1 Post by blackomegax » Mon Jan 14, 2008 6:30 pm

I bought a T60/61 bluetooth daughter card for 10 bucks (refurb), after looking at the manual and seeing how "easy" it looked to just pop the cover of the LCD.

However, that seems to be impossible. i removed all screws, but the back (top) cover of the LCD is utterly and completely stuck. any more force and it'd break something.

Anyone else run into issues like this?

the daugther card goes under the the keyboard. You rmove the screws for the palmrest and then the keyboard and remove the modem that's there now and repalce it with the modem/bluetooth combo card.

no, the service guide explicitly says it goes in the LCD casement. and refers to the guide of taking apart the LCD. however, the plug for the modem may share with the bluetooth and i may do that since, who USES modems anymore? :)

Yep! you are 100% spot on, in the T60(p) & T61(p) the Bluetooth module is independent and is located within the LCD bezel - unlike the versions within the T4x which is a shared module with the 56k modem.

If you have a T60(p) that did not come with Bluetooth installed you will probably need to replace the LCD cable assembly to accommodate the Bluetooth module - (as there 2 types of LCD cable assembly - one with the Bluetooth socket and one without)

The LCD is usually stuck to the bezel by a resin/glue which is not mentioned in the HMM. (Please see this Post for a little more info: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=)

Wish you well in your upgrade :)

Or you could just buy a really cheap "Bluespoon" USB stick adapter. It comes with the well-regarded Toshiba Bluetooth stack and enables most of the desirable BT functions.

I have it on my R52 to use with BT GPS, and it's never caused any problems at all. That ThinkPad is destined to become the core of my carputer this spring.
