T61-Hard disk appears full

#1 Post by harikrishnareddy » Tue Jan 15, 2008 12:04 pm

Hi,

I'm using T61 7658-CTO model which was bought a month ago.

It has a some 30GB data of 142GB memory. but still I'm seeing the message that only rougly '2GB of 142GB is free'

The 30GB data comprise of Audio songs and some pictures.
I'm just wondering what would be the cause for this.

Anyone had this kind of Problem earlier.

OS: Vista Premium

Thanks,
Hari

maybe restore backups is created to fil the HDD. Open Rescue and Recovery and turn off backups or set it to backup to an external drive.

R&R seems to make full backups of the OS couple times and it's full backupss are like 20GB or something and therefore it does it a few times your drive is full.

I'm by no means an expert, but I will definitely agree that Vista seems to have major issues reading disk space. I know I've loaded my computer, seen XX.X GB free, then not twenty minutes later, see that its 400MB less for no apparent reason. I don't know how Vista works (someone else can probably enlighten us), but it may have something to do with a "feature" of windows.

Two things you might try in addition to Shotta35's R&R comment:

1) Run disk cleanup. When I looked up this issue before, I came across this article. Your problem sounds similar.

2) When I want an honest answer for how much free space I have, I run diskeeper. Just analyze the hard drive, and see how much you have free. For me, right now, Windows reports 15GB free, and Diskeeper reports 15.5GB free.

Good luck.

Thanks a ton to both of you!!...

As you said that it was the automatic back up that used the entire hard disk. I cleared most of the disk and it now shows the free memory.

Also, as Poximex said, when i ran the disk clean up using the 2nd option, it has thrown out another 10GB of free memory.

Thanks,
Hari

Vista and Rescue and recovery

Vista and Rescue and recovery

There s a bug on few models.
If you want to clean the hard drive, you have to make a low level format, reinstall via the cd.
Then uninstall Rescue and recovery

Its the only way for stop that.

Sorry about that, lol
it's not a laptop, It's a Thinkpad
