Hi Everyone, first just want to say i'm a proud new owner of a Thinkpad t61 14.1 ws... i'm very happy with it, and this is my first post, but just had a general question and wondering if all new thinkpads are like this... well basically i was a little surprised when i opened my box and when i finally got everything out, all i had were the manuals, and power cord, and of course the laptop. But i had no windows xp pro cd or any type of Lenovo software.. is that normal?
Also there is a 5.5gig service001 partition... is that my "recovery dvd" and if it is, would it be a good idea to maybe copy that info to a dvd and delete the partition so i can have access to my full hard drive? any tips or ideas?
Thank you all very much! Hope to meet and chat with you all!

That's not recovery dvd, that is a recovery partition. Please create a set of Product Recovery disks before deleting something:
How to create recovery media using ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery.
One consequence of deleting service partition is that the blue button would not function to let you reinstall Windows while you are on a business trip or vacation etc. away from the Product Recovery disks unless you take these disks with you wherever you go.
I gave my suggestion, you're entitled to do anything you want with your machine.

Thanks! so it's probably not worth creating the recovery disk set... that's all i wanted to know, just making sure that it was the recovery partition... i appreciate the advice.

phobic,
It IS worthwhile to make a back-up copy of the recovery disks BEFORE you lose all access ....for whatever reason....to the hard drive.
If you do any MBR fiddling....especially.
One CD for 9.5c and one DVD at 19c = 28.5c for an emergency back-up.

alacrityathome has a very good point, it's better to be safe than sorry.

No, it is worth creating the Product Recovery disks and keeping service partition.
