hi all,

I'm gonna buy a T61p - my always-in-dream laptop. The price is quite cheap with the configuration (according to our market). The low price does have its two sides, as always: the chance to save some of my money, and another is how to know that it is a genuine T61p.

It would be a big help if you, the experts in Thinkpads, can give me some hints or tips so that I can check if the laptop is real one. I'm dizzy with making the final decision now Please help me out of the problem

welcome to the forum. if you have any way to test the PC before buying, the Lenovo has many specific software programs which you can confirm......like the thinkpad productivity center....or access wireless connections.

thank you for your reponse, it would be great if you can give me a bit more detailed hints like which software I should use and the purpose of using that software. (as there are so many things inside the lappy needed to be checked, right? like HDD, RAM, CPU, VGA...)

Get the 7 character product number (machine type and model), put it in the lenovo's Product Finder, do a Parts Lookup with the Serial Number, match the specs and parts with PC-Doctor, call lenovo with Serial Number in hand to verify whether the machine is "real one" and possibly not reported stolen.

I'm gonna buy the laptop tomorrow, information is enough for me, now just need to be sure that everything will be checked before giving out the money.

P/S: Here will be my checklist
Serial validity:
- Case (same serial number with laptop)
- Customs paper, sale invoice
- When booting, press F11 to see serial number in BIOS to see if it’s the same.
- In windows, use ‘dxdiag’ command to check

CPU:
- Use CPU Identification of Intel to check

General:
- Check for scratches and screws
- Press Thinkpad + F11 to let the laptop automatically check for its hardwares (if there is a illegal hardware, the warning will be displayed. The hardwares MUST have the same serial)
- Smooth dark case with a bit special smell

CD
- Use some CD / DVD to play

Speaker:
- Play a song

Keyboard:
- Check all the keys

LCD
- Check if there is any dead pixel in the screen

Hardwares
- Use some tools like (Event, SIW) to see the hardware if the hardware is genuine.

RAM, HDD - Maybe I will use Hiren's Boot CD to check them
