new T61 with 4gb ram, shows 3gb

hello

received new T61 yesterday, opened 5 screws and installed original lenovo 2 gb modules under touchpad, total 4gb ram, correct type of modules for the machine (supplied by ibm)

bios shows 4gb installed

when xp pro sp2 "my computer, properties" is accessed, it shows 3gb as does everest ultimate edition

however, everest shows under DMI, Dimm Slot 1 and Dimm Slot 2 as DIMM, SDRAM, speed 155s, Installed Size 2048mb, Enabled Size 2048mb for both slots, yet somehow I lose 1024mb
