soundmax trouble on T61

imaged new 100gb/7200rpm drive yesterday from a volume license edition of xp sp2 and installed bare minimum lenovo drivers (ethernet, wireless, nvidia video)
after setup, used the lenovo system updater and allowed it to install critical updates and also soundmax
installation was uneventful and everything was working, wired and wireless network, sound, mouse, video, etc.
then couple hours later upon reboot and reload of OS, got greeting at desktop that the Audio Bus/Soundmax needed to be reinstalled and the mouse was frozen solid, had to use alt-esc to navigate keyboard only to reboot. next reboot, everything was working. couple hours later, after another reboot (yes, I deliberately tested reboot to see what would happen), the same thing, SoundMax would need reinstall
I finally did uninstall it and now Hardware manager has an angry yellow icon with Audio Bus something....
is this a known issue with Soundmax? I even downloaded directly from ibm online support the very latest audio package installation but same results.
I supposed I don't need digital audio but was surprised it conflicted with the mouse/touchpad drivers?
