Help diagnosing a hibernation problem

#1 Post by dzenc » Fri Jan 18, 2008 5:07 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a little help in diagnosing a problem. My brand new R61 is having trouble coming out of hibernation, and I've found a T61p that is behaving exactly the same way.

I'm also aware that there were a batch of bad T61p motherboards and I'm wondering if I've got a bad R61 and/or T61p...

Anyway, I'm looking for someone with a T61 or T61p or R61 with nVidia graphics and 2 sticks of memory who's running Windows XP to run the following (quick) test:

1. Go into control panel, power options, select the "advanced" tab, and set:

- When I close the lid of my portable computer: "Do nothing" <-- this is important!
- When I press the power button on my computer: "Hibernate" <-- this one too!
- When I press the sleep button on my computer: "Stand by"

(make sure hibernation is already enabled in the "hibernate" tab)

2. Choose OK.

3. Push the power button for 2 seconds (until it starts to hibernate)

4. As soon as it STARTS to hibernate, IMMEDIATELY close the lid.

5. Wait until it completes hibernating.

6. Wait an additional 60 seconds.

7. Open the lid and power on the laptop.

On my system, this has a 90% chance of crashing the system before it comes out of hibernation.

I've already tried on both a factory fresh image, as well as one with all the latest drivers (and bios), and it still happens reliably.

Anyway, I'd love to know if this happens on other systems as well. If anyone is willing to run this test and report back, I'd be very, very appreciative. :-)

Thanks in advance!

-Dan

Glad to find this thread. I also have a T61p with model 6457AK1, and am suffering from the same problem. When I choose "standby when close the lid", after I open the lid, I'v got no chance to have the system work. Many many threads crashes, and then system crashes. The same situation occurs when I click "standby" at the start menu. I don't know what's exactly the cause. The only suspect is the confliction among softwares. Because my system passed all the PC Doctor test and MemTest. Do u guys have any advice?

I suspect that we both have bad motherboards, but I can't say for sure. If I were you, I would call Lenovo for warranty repair.

Is everyone else able to successfully use hibernate and/or suspend mode with the lid closed?

I would really love it if someone could try the (easy) steps in my first post and let me know if they can get it to work, because that would definitively confirm that I've got a bad motherboard.

I'm also working this with Lenovo, and I'll let you know what I find out...

Thanks again,
Dan

One guy in my company also suffers this hibernation/standby issue. But His is a T61 A24, not T61p. However, I also think it's a software compatibility issue.
