Hi guys,

When I first bought my T61, it came with Vista. I later installed windows xp, which went fine. Lately i've been planning to do a fresh install of XP again, because of all the apps, that has been installed, etc.

Now I'm done, and it all went just fine, BUT.. I have two slight problems;

1. WLAN doesn't show in ThinkPad AccessConnections
2. There's still one unidentified unit, that needs to be installed.

I've posted two screencaptures, to illustrate the problem.

Uninstall all the following items, then reinstall the same components:

1) Thinkpad Power Manager and Driver
2) Access Connections and Profiles
3) The driver for the wireless card
4) Fn-F5 utility (whatever the right name is!), which may require also uninstalling a couple of other small Thinkpad utilities.

Probably not! But see what remains after you fix the WLAN problem ...

I fixed the hardware-issue myself. It was the cardreader that wasn't installed, allthough the system updater had installed the driver. Strange.

Hmm. The problem wasn't solved after all. Allthough it doesn't show a "unidentified" icon anymore, it tells me about a unidentified pci slot, after each reboot.

Should i reinstall in any specific order?

I give up... I did what you wrote, but it didn't help. Now I just want to find out, what i need to install, to get rid of that "windows found new hardware"-pci message, each time i reboot.

Anybody have a clue?

Yes. 1) WLAN driver, 2) Power Manager, 3) Access Connections, 4) Fn-F5 utility. On a healthy Windows XP system, the uninstall and reinstall of these components solves the problem you described. If your problem persists, then Windows has some corruption in the Registry which one cannot find with normal "tools".

I know it is time-consuming, but -- if you wish -- you can prove to yourself that the procedure I have described is effective by trying it on a fresh Windows XP installation. Everybody who knows how to fix this situation will tell you the same thing: uninstall and reinstall the 4 components mentioned above; that is the only thing that can work IF nothing else is wrong.

The unidentified device will be handled once you install all the hardware drivers from:

(It sounds to me like you know how to differentiate between "drivers" and other software, so I will not list the specific pieces you need from the link above.)

As a side note: the fact that you think that the driver was installed but was not working properly may be indicative of greater corruption issues, perhaps some related to the WLAN problem.

If you have imaging backup/restore software and disk space, then save an image of your existing system, do a fresh XP install, add only the above components, and verify that things work. As you "build" the system with additional software, you will discover the culprit which is responsible for the WLAN problem. You can always revert back to the saved image without losing anything other than time!

I have seen the pathology you describe sufficient times to recognize that persistence is unlikely to get you out of your predicament, whereas a fresh install of Windows XP will resolve the issue.

Yehaa, I fixed the problem with the wireless lan not showing in access connections!
But I still have windows telling me about a unidentified pci unit, each time i reboot.
I really don't know what it could be. I have installed sound, cardreader, tpm, bluetooth,
lan, ethernet, chipset, display and modem.

I've looked at the software and driver list at the lenovo support page, over and over, but I
can't find anything, that I haven't allready installed, and windows doesn't give me any info
on what kind of hardware is it, that needs to be installed.

Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be?

install system update and let it do its job.. it will install all the drivers needed..

System updater has already installed all of the updates and software, besides rescue and recovery, access help, system migration assistant, multimedia center, help center and pc doctor 5. That shouldn't be a problem, right? Isn't there some way to find out, which driver I need to inssall, or which pci-device it is, that isn't installed? I'm getting frustrated here

Go into device manager, double click on the unknown device, go to the "Details" tab, and select "Hardware Ids" to find out what the PCI vendor and device ids are, then post them here (or do a google search).

Thanks, but the problem is, that windows only complains about "new hardware found", when i reboot. In device manager, it shows nothing uninstalled.

get into safe mode. Unknown devices should show up there. Delete it. Reboot normally.

Hi,

I tried rebooting in safe mode, and it was the same. Windows tells me that it found new hardware (pci device), but device manager shows no uninstalled pci devices or any problem at all. Everything works just fine (yes, all tested).

What would guy guys do, and what could the issue be here?

I experienced a similar problem to what you are describing when I was asked to install a New OEM copy of XP on a clients T60p - XP installed ok along with manually installing the OSFIXES which was backed up from the original IBM XP install - On re-boot received the Hardware install/updated wizard pop-up, checked in the Device Manager found the Yellow exclaimaition mark against unknown PCI device - rechecked to see if drivers for the Lenovo bloatware was present etc - they were.

After a couple of hours un-installing, re-installing software, drivers and OSFIXES - the Hardware install/updated wizard pop-up still remained. So, cross referenced what was installed on the clients T60p with my T60p - found that in the Device Manager > View > Resources by type > Interrupt request (IRQ), IRQ (PCI) 17 was showing an additional device: Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio. Tracked down the driver on my T60p in: C:\IBMTOOLS\drivers\UAAHDAXP\XPSP2 - copied and installed on the clients T60p - Problem solved!

It just could be, that this driver is missing, check in your Device Manager > System devices and make sure the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio is present if not install it from the Lenovo site: (link). Note: the driver propeties state it is located on a PCI bus (Location PCI bus 0, device 27, function 0).

The problem is PCI 16 :-/ I tried looking in the details, but it gave me nothing that could indicate what kind of hardware it was... Maybe someone with a similar model, could look their devicelist up, and tell me which pci device it is...?

Ok, I know that your T61 chipset architecture is different to my T60p - but on checking your IRQ's against mine they are pretty similar. On IRQ (PCI) 16 mine has the Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller, not sure if your T61 needs this driver.

I'm pretty sure, that I already have a driver for the SATA controller installed. I installed the matrix driver for the hdd, and it found and installed the driver proper, so it shouldn't be a problem. I just need one with a similar t61, to tell me which driver it is. Someone!

I have seen this issue before. I also do clean insalls of Windows frequently as this service is a portion of my business model.

One of the things to try:

install a card in the card reader. Then update the driver within windows selecting yes when asked about updating from the Internet. You also need to be connected to thei Internet...

Nothing seems to solve this problem

I've tried to focus on the cardreader, but that doesn't seem to be that easy either. Uninstalling the drivers, just result in windows reinstalling them without "telling me" after a reboot. I only have a MicroSDHC in a SD-adapter to test with, so I really don't know, if it's the cardreader that isn't supporting the card, or if it's the drivers that a unfunctional, OR if the problem just isn't the cardreader. I'm really getting tired of this, and considering a 3rd format, allthough that probably will result in a new problem.

When writing in office yesterday, I got a bluescreen followed by a reboot... Something is wrong here.

What could I do next? What would you guys do?

Any advice is welcome.

I upgraded to XP from the OEM Vista Ultimate that came on my TP T61p. I'm sorry I don't have a solution - but I can confirm you are not the only one having this issue. Although I think the BSOD is unrelated to this specific issue...

I've literally uninstalled and reinstalled every device I could before wiping the whole OS and reinstalling to no avail. It's a small annoyance, but survivable. I was hoping to find a solution, but I'll just add this thread to my list to watch.

I have a sneaking suspicion it's also in the SD slot, but I don't have anything that relies on SDIO (like an SD Wifi card) to test it with. Regular SD cards work great.

What? First of all, my computer came with Vista Business. I have removed the recovery partition from my harddrive - I'll never get to use it anyway. So what did you mean by that?

Skimmed this thread quickly, so sorry if this is incorrect. If you still have a device that needs a driver and have the turbo memory option on your Thinkpad, it could be that. Install the XP driver that makes XP ignore the turbo memory.

Allows the user to control fan activity based on the system temperature.
