Hi All,
I have installed Windows Server 2003 x64 on my T61p.
It works great, you got all the features of server OS, extreme speed on 64 bit platform.
What I have noticed so far is:
1. Atmel Security Chip (TPM) does not work. Not really sure I need it anyway...
2. Internal Microphone does not work either. But luckily external MIC works fine.
2A. Related to internal/external MIC. I do not see Advanced Properties when accessing Recording Devices, therefore can not switch on Boosting for the MIC.
The rest of the devices works fine.
Please share your experience installing W2003 x64 on T61p
Desperately need help getting win svr 2K3 x64 on T61p

SV,
Could you please share what drivers you used to get Windows Server 2003 x64 on your T61p? I have spent an entire weekend trying to find drivers and still have multiple (10) devices in Device Manager that are unidentified, including the High Definition Audio and various Base Controllers. Additionally Bluetooth is installed but not working.
Any help you could provide would be extremely appreciated before I throw it out the window.

Drivers for W2K3 x64 on T61p

Hi Eric,
It was a bit difficult to find the right drivers, but I could help explaining what I have for each particular device. There is no set of ready drivers, so I did , same as you, just spent few days.
1. Video drivers. There are no "out of the box" drivers for NVIDIA FX570FM for 2K3 x64. What I did I tweaked the .inf file, addind "compatible" device manually. Later on I found that this solution is already described in the internet. You did not mention video so I assume you also managed to install it.
2. Secondly I installed service pack 2 on my os. It has some compatibility for HD audio bus on it, so you do not need to install so well advertised microsoft hot fixes for HD audio. Just the right drivers. In any case SoundMax executable file will always prompt you an error when it starts, so, finally. The drivers for sound, I used 6.10.2.5510 version of the standard driver for Vista x64.
Look for them in the folder: DRIVERS\AUDIO\AMD64\VISTA or so.
After you had installed SP2 on W2K3 x64 it should let you install audio. Then you can either remove execution of SoundMax.exe to cancel the prompt every time you boot up or just replace it by the file for XP or W2000 from similar drivers, in any case it would not "work" as it supposed to, see my original post.
3. Modem, as soon as you got HD bus the modem can be installed by running drivers from Lenovo 7.62.0.0. again in any case VOICE service on your modem would not work, but do we need it???
\DRIVERS\HDAMODEM
4. Bluetooth, I guess you have the same problem, HD bus, drivers I used are version 5.1.0.2900
from here:\DRIVERS\TPBTooth
5. If you could let me know what are the identification for the unknown drivers, like : ACPI\ATM1200\4&374CCB25&0, then I could tell you what they are. Like the above one is atmel security chip

Sergey,
Thanks for your help. Here are my current stumbling blocks:
a.) sound - I installed SP2 but still can't get anything to work. I've tried the audio drivers with no luck.
b.) Bluetooth installs but the device nevers 'starts' and so the BT system tray says it can't find any BT devices.
c.) I agree that the modem isn't necessary. If that's the only device on the 'unknown' list I'll dance a jig.
d.) Here is the list of unknown devices:
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_11D4&DEV_1984&SUBSYS_17AA20BB&REV_1004
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&SUBSYS_20CA17AA&REV_11
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0843&SUBSYS_20C917AA&REV_11
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0852&SUBSYS_20CB17AA&REV_11
USB\VID_0483&PID_2016
HDAUDIO\FUNC_02&VEN_14F1&DEV_2BFA&SUBSYS_17AA201B&REV_0900
ACPI\ATM1200
ACPI\IBM0068
If you have any links to the files you used that would be amazing. Thank you for all your help.

Windows Server 2003 x64 is identical to Windows XP x64, from a kernel and driver perspective. Unlike the 32-bit versions of the OS, where WS03 is a significant upgrade.
However..T61p never really had good XP x64 drivers..and XP x64 is pretty much dead anyways.
If you NEED a server OS on a laptop, then go with Windows Server 08. Identical kernel to Vista x64 SP1, so you know everything will work.

Hi Eric,
Make sure HD Audio bus is functioning. Without it you would not be able to connect sound and modem. Please dig the web on how to install it, it comes with SP for 2003, or you can use the hot fix and install it manually. KB901105. But I did not installed the HF package but somehow (forget how exactly) made it working for my pc.
Back to our devices...
Device is: Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio.
Driver file is: hdaudbus.sys
Version: 5.10.01.5013
Instance: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_284B&SUBSYS_20AC17AA&REV_03\3&B1BFB68&0&D8
This is exactly must work before you go any further.
Ok.
From your list:
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_11D4&DEV_1984&SUBSYS_17AA20BB&REV_1004\4&30E64BEC&3&0001
is a SoundMax Integrated Digital HD Audio, which can be installed after you connected HD Audio bus.
The drivers I used are version 6.10.2.5510 and are from \Audio\AMD64\VISTA folder of drivers I am going to point you later.
ACPI\ATM1200 is a ATMEL security chip, that we do not need I guess. No drivers for it so far...
HDAUDIO\FUNC_02&VEN_14F1&DEV_2BFA&SUBSYS_17AA201B&REV_0900 is a modem. Drivers I have are version 7.62.0.0 and ar in the folder \HDAMODEM
These 3 are related to Ricoh Memory card reader:
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&SUBSYS_20CA17AA&REV_11
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0843&SUBSYS_20C917AA&REV_11
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0852&SUBSYS_20CB17AA&REV_11
I used driver 6.0.1.12 from Ricoh company.
Find it in \4IN1
This one is a fingerprint sensor.
USB\VID_0483&PID_2016
Driver Version 1.9.2.93 from company called UPEK
Take it from \Finger Print Software
This one is a ThinkPad Power management device.
ACPI\IBM0068
Driver version 1.43.0.0
Folder: \IBMPM
Now the best part, where to send you the files? I do not have public FTP. Any ideas?
The whole package weight 34 Mb.

Hi Proteus,
We need 2003 x64 to work on ThinkPad T61p, not 2008. That was the name of the post, please try to keep-on this topic.
XPx64 drivers are NOT compatible with W2003 x64, would suggest if you tried them first. I tried. They are not...
2003 x64 works perfectly on T61p and I am here to share it with the others how to achieve it.

Windows 2003 x64 and XP64 share an identical kernel. Any drivers for XP64 will of course work on WS03 x64. However, realize that both are now obsolete, and do not support latest hardware. Obviously, if you must use Win2003 x64, you would obviously be running SP2 slipstream!
1)Atmel security chip. Only natively supported in Vista
2) enable the appropriate servces. WS03 has certain services (audio, CD burining) disabled by default. Read the MSFN "windows 2003 workstation guide" for tips on enabling.

I cannot make Thinkpad wireless abg work on T61p under Window server 2003 RC1. The XP driver can be installed for this wireless card but code 10 error is reported.

Hi Casperkid,
My wireless works ok on W2K3 R2 x64 SP2. I am not sure about SP1 but it should not be an issue too.
Driver that I had used is:
11.5.0.36
and it comes as a standard driver for XP x64.
When you take it from lenovo it installs into WIN\WLANINT2
package name: 7kwc50ww.exe

casperkid was asking about the ThinkPad wireless, and not the Intel wireless. Unfortunately, I know Intel has a driver for XP Pro. x64 (which should work for Server 2k3 x64), but I am not so sure about the ThinkPad ABG wireless (but probably not).
I have recently installed XP Pro. x64 Edition, and was wondering if the method S.V. used can be used to get sound working on my own machine. I have tried the Vista driver and the XP driver for the ThinkPad AudioFeatures, but neither works. Unless there's a way to get past Vista being for the wrong O.S., I probably won't have much reason to run XP x64 for much longer.
I'd hoped to get the drivers working, but it seems like the driver support is just too minimal.
EDITZ: Ah, using the have disk method makes the sound work -- though every restart gives the "not for this operating system" dialogue. Alas.
Now to sort out the SATA/AHCI drivers....

Hi Uodnelome,
I guess what ThinkPad Wireless is, is this a shell that comes from Lenovo? If yes, of course, software that is on top of the standard drivers might not work on W2K3 x64 R2. But the whole idea of this post was to make OS working with all the hardware devices recognised. I very doubt any one would need Lenovo software shells on server os, honestly - I do not need it at all.
My wireless adapter works with intel drivers fine.
Or you mean Wireless adapter that comes from Lenovo itself? I never tried, my notebook is T61p.
As per your XP x64 sound problems.
You need to activate HD Audio bus. It CAN be done on XP x64.
Please find a KB article from Microsoft regarding HD Audio bus support, after you installed a HF it should work.
You got the message that file is used for wrong os, may I know is this a modem VOICE feature or SoundMax.exe?
If modem - do you really need it? If soundMax - same question, I just removed this exe from execution at the start.

are you talking about installing that card under 2003
x86? if so, i never did get my atheros a/b/g card installed under server 2003. it always showed a code 10 error.

Thanks for all your posts on this topic. My new T61p arrives on Monday and I'm eager to install W2K3 x64 R2. I may have a few questions on some of the stuff you tweaked to get it to work.

Encourage by your postings I did it too:
brandnew
Thinkpad T61P, 14,1 Zoll
T9500 CPU
Nvidia FX 570 M
Intel Lan + Wlan,
...
Now I can open CAD Modells upt to 3 GB in WF2, what was impossible before.
I got all drivers working, just not the bluetooth and fingerprint, which is not important for me. Is used most vita64 drivers which are already saved on the harddisk (complete format but saved thembefore) and some 32 bit XP drivers.
The main problem is the missing nvidia 570m driver for xp 64 bit. I used the tweaked driver + infile from :
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/ind ... opic=17741
This is perfect simple working !
It seems to be stable in PROE Wildfire 2 after some tests, but I cannot say this definetely jet, just hope for the best !!!!
More help is written herer too:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=239303
General driver problemes:
The driver programs from vista do not start (but drivers can be seleted manually) and the xp drivers 32bit start but cannot be installed.
I hope the graphics stays stable, the performance is incredible as it was on xp 32 bit already. .... So just try first vista 64, then xp 32 bit. for example for chipset I used a common driver from lenovo page.
Benno
(why xp64 ? because lots of cad models are bigger than 2 GB and the cad software is not running at all or propperly on vista 64 jet)
