Need help on system board

#1 Post by rodwilsonsr » Thu Jan 24, 2008 9:06 am

I had posted a while ago regarding a T61p 6459cto machine that was 2 weeks old that I splashed coffee on. I dont have the accident warranty and the EZ Serv Depot service quoted me 950 dollars to repair it.
I had them ship the laptop back to me unrepaired.

So I am on the hunt for a system board, they look to retail for 850 from ACS, and I did find a guy in CA that actually repairs the chips on system boards, he feels confident he can repair it.

I guess I just dont know what to do. Do I suck up the 950, get it fixed by IBM, ensure that the remainder of the warranty is still intact.
Or do I try and fix it myself, either replace the board myself, or have the board repaired. Would IBM consider this fixed and the warranty be intact?

OR do I just buy a new laptop and consider this one parts?

I went round and round with IBM yesterday and they will not budge on the repair price.

Another question...my FRU for the system board is 42w7653
There is a system board on ebay with an FRU of 42w7652

Any thoughts on compatibility issues?
Thanks
Rod

when it got wet, can you describe in order what you saw, heard, or any smells?

Naturally your warranty is tied to your laptop's original configuration component serial numbers. So not only is your laptop's serial number recorded, so are the serial numbers of the components inside the laptop as well...no doubt including the motherboard's.

So swapping out any serialized internal components will void your warranty. Also any repairs made to the motherboard without Lenovo's authorization will void your warranty, too.

ACTUALLY if you swap the motherboard yourself, you warranty wont get void if you change the new motherboard's type and s/n to your original motherboard's identity.

Proof:
My friend's t43p still under warranty after he swaped the wireless card and LCD screen himself!

There are more ways to identify non IBM serviced parts.

meekus, is right.

Mentioned part # should work.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

HELLO!!?? Is my microphone turned off? I asked what happened when it got wet. My point is that the mb may not be the problem.

It appears that the USB Sub Card got wet from coffee. This sub card is plugged into the system board via a small wire.
The laptop worked fine for 3 days after the spill, then it shut down and would not power on anymore.
IBM is the ones that said it would need the usb sub card and the system board.

Sell off all the parts individually and buy a new T61, this time with accident protection, just in case.
X201 Pentium, 4 GB RAM, 320GB 7200RPM
T410 Core i5, 4 GB RAM, 500GB 7200RPM
X230 Core i5, 4 GB RAM, 500GB 7200RPM
