I have no trouble connecting to my wireless network with a strong signal but as soon as I try and hook up to a friends there is no signal. We both have the same routers and I unchecked the battery only overide that disables the adapter?

T60 Type 1952 1.83ghz Centrino Duo.

Which software are you using to connect to his/her network, are there any network requirements? if so, then have you configured the settings?

For a wireless connection to work properly on your machine, you need to instruct it about the network connection you're connecting to, for e.g. is it an access point, ad hoc or infrastructure?

I also assume by Windows XP you meant you're not using ThinkVantage Access Connections.

I've always used xp's software and just installed the network keys when prompted.

Having the same router doesn't mean much, unless they have the same firmware load AND you have everything including the SSID names set the same. These days, the SSID is set individually during connection to your ISP.

So...you are probably not connecting because you don't have something set to match his router. SSID? Mac access filter? protocol types? Forced a/b/g selection?

Your best bet if that all sounds like geek to you, is to go through every setup screen in your router, write down every setting, and then compare them to the ones on your friend's router, looking for the difference. Could just be you made a typo in the network SSID, the password, or the authentication choices. (If you are using WEP, you wil be hacked. If you are using WPA...there are different options, you need to be using the same ones and not all computers support all options.)
