Is it possible to swap a cingular card with verizon?

#1 Post by kingweb » Tue Jan 29, 2008 5:40 pm

On my T61 14 inch, I got a cingular WWAN card built in.
I wrongly assumed that Cingular would offer a similar daily use plan like Verizon does.

On my older Z61t, I used to pay $15/day for 24 hours of usage. This was great for when I went on a trip and need WWAN. When I am home I don't need it. I can't understand why Cingular isn't smart enough to offer such an obvious plan. ALL of their data plans require a 1 year commitment.

So what I want to do is buy a Verizon card pulled from a Lenovo/IBM system from ebay and swap it with the Cingular card currently in my T61.

1. Will I need to change the antenna or will the same antenna continue to work.

2. I assume that the wire(s) connecting from the Cingular card to the SIM card slot will just sit there disconnected when I put the Verizon card in there.

Is this possible? Has anyone tried it?

i couldn't find a separate antenna assembly for each WWAN system.   they appear to use the same antenna.

here is a link to the 14.1" T60/T60p hardware maintenance manual:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67979

if the antenna truly are the same then a simple card swap and driver installation should be all that's required.

Great thanks.
After I wrote the original message, it just hit me that I could take the verizon card from my z61t and put it in my t61, but I noticed on ebay, that the z61t and the t61 do NOT use the same model number of verizon card.

That doesn't neccesarrily mean that it won't work, but I though I would ask here before I started taking everything apart.
Anybody?

if the Z61T card isn't hardware compatible then you'll get an error message at boot.   otherwise all it should take is the right driver.
