i solved my screen flickering problem by uninstalling catalyst control center and the lenovo driver. I then used windows update to find the correct driver. currently i don't have catalyst control center installed on my system. My screen also does not flicker anymore, but what will be the consequences?

maybe you won't be put into a somnabulistic or hypnotic state any longer..

heheh. - maybe the flickering is a way of lenovo sending us subliminal messages?

no. i did not change OS. all of the sudden for no reason in the past 8 months i've noticed that my screen flickers during start up. then 2 weeks ago i've noticed that my screen flickers every 30 seconds. i did a little bit of my search and it looked most likely as lenovo driver issue. so i got rid of lenovo drivers and i let windows upload drivers from the windows update (good old MS).

That also happened to me after installing a certain Lenovo driver. But I didn't get to know which one...

Do you know exactly which one is the cause of the problem?

i never install any updates/new drivers/ (one exception-i updated bios once to version 2.14) ... etc... i always keep everything the way it is out of factory (unless there is an obvious problem). in this case the only thing i did was removing Catalyst Control Center (CCC) and the video driver, then i restarted my computer and used windows update to get the new driver. Currently i don't have CCC installed. Thanks to this i also have 50mb more free ram (not that i currently need it).

But do you think the CCC has any influence in the flickering? Could it be that the video driver is the only problem?

If power usage or heat/noise is an issue, you might want to verify that your GPU is still able to use power saving modes.

On my T60 with ATI X1400, I installed XP using nlite, and haven't been able to get CCC installed yet. According to NHC, my GPU is in high speed mode, no matter which power scheme I select. I haven't tested with battery though.

With factory install of XP, including CCC, I was able to put GPU into power saving mode, even when plugged in.

and regarding the GPU usage I will certainly observe the temperature log.

I'm using the latest driver/ccc from ATi. In order to get it to install, you can use the tool from here:

Powerplay is included in the ccc but I don't use it. I don't notice any flickering (nor did I with other drivers).

Just installed the NVidia 570M card driver that is in the Windows Updates (Optional update so it isn't automatically installed).
IT SOLVED THE FLICKERING PROBLEM!!!

So this flickering is due to the video driver of Lenovo.

actually guys i've just checked the extra information for the "ATI Display Driver" in the "Add/Remove Programs" window. To my surprise the driver actually does belong to Lenovo. as it says the following,
"8.293.1-060913a-036475C-Lenovo." The difference is that I asked my computer to look for the appropriate driver through Windows Update. However weird it is, this thing solved my flickering. Maybe using Lenovo drivers w/o CCC makes a difference. I still didn't notice any heat issues. As a matter of fact my fan does not seem to turn on as often, but this could be a placebo effect.
