hmmm... seems like this charger can't reliably charge at 20v... the power brick that came w/my T61 gets pretty hot when i'm running at full load on my computer. I don't think I'd feel safe with something that ran significantly hotter.

It got pretty hot, not sizzling, but up there. Im still waiting for a response from Kensington; will post when I do.

my friend's kensington got hot enough that he didn't want to pick it up. while a small sample, i'd guess they are all this way. in the world of electronics you really do get what you pay for.
my lenovo slim adapter has been running great for the last week. so far, no complaints. i need to look into the Y cable and pick up adapters for other devices.

There's a review of the slim adapter up at
Notebook Review.
Among other things the reviewer managed to get into a Boeing 767 with it and had this to say:
"On the 767-400 flying out, as well as the 767-200 coming back we had a power plug on the front of our seats in coach. Having unlimited power for 9 hours of flight to kill time is one of the most splendid experiences you could imagine."
That is better than the 13-hour nonstop flights I've had with no power outlets in sight. Once on one of those they looped the same movie
four times!

Is this only dangerous for the charger..or possibly the Laptop too?

My Kensington 120W power brick gets quite warm, but definitely not "too hot to touch". I'm using it with a T61+integrated graphics, so I'm not using all 120W
Note the short power cord, its supposed to dangle in the air while plugged in an outlet.
which one?

There are two versions of this on the IBM web store, and one is on sale. There is a small difference in the product weight and dimensions. The part numbers are
40Y7630 and
41N8460.
Anyone know what the difference is? Thanks.
mod edit: fixed long links.

40Y7630 is the old adapter. it will work with 20V thinkpads but does not have the multiple tip options like the new one (41N8460) or the optional dual charging cable to charge multiple devices simultaneously.

I bought the
Kensington from J&R, about a month ago, when this thread started. I thought I would give it a try, for $20 bucks... Here are my first impressions.
I received it in about three days (good for JR), and started using it about five days after that, so it's been about three weeks since I have been using it everyday (I got the N29 tip for free from Kensington). It works as described, it has never gotten too hot, only lukewarm. This past Monday the T60 got substantially more use than normal, and it got slightly warmer, but not much more so than the previous days. The cable is long, and seems thick enough (at least as thick as Lenovo's original adapter). I must also say that the unit is very light and thin, hence relatively easy to put away in almost any corner of your bag/suitcase.
The one drawback I found was that the piece of cable that goes from the wall outlet to the adapter is rather short, and most times the adapter ends up hanging from the wall.
So in short, in the three weeks of everyday use, I am satisfied with the Kensington adapter. It works just like the Lenovo original adapter. I would prefer to buy the Lenovo, but for $20 it's hard to beat. Tomorrow I am headed for Toronto, and I will try and test it with the cigarette lighter outlet in the plane (IF I get a seat that has one that is

). I will report back if I am able to test it. I hope this helps some people make up their minds.

I ordered mine from Lenovo Feb 5th and it still has not shipped (march 14). Given the sloppy lenovo customer service, I guess I will not really know when I will get it. Anyone else have the same issues?

Jay, I ordered mine at the same time. Last I noted, the delivery continues to be pushed back. I seem to remember seeing March 30th being expected.

Thanks for that affirmation- Their information system sucks. apparently there is an entity called "supply team" which has the "secret" information you won't see mirrored on their order status website. ah well
