DVD unit problems

New T61, windows XP.DVD write unit.
It will not read a DVD-R disk, written elsewhere which is readable by other machines I have tried it on. If I write a CDRW disk, then perfectly readable on the thinkpad but on any other machine, it is slow, literally 3 minutes per directory entry.
Have emailed Lenovo support which seems deliberately designed to be unhelpful.
So, has anyone else had this problem? Also does anyone have a freephone number for thinkpad support in the UK. I would like a new DVD unit.
