Is this an overheating problem?

Hello Forum,

I have had my T60 (Type: 2008 Model BF5) shut down itself a few times in the past 3 months, but I didn't think much of it until it shut down 3 times in a row last night.

It was getting very hot, so I suspected overheating. This is what TP Fan Control v0.18 says now, after 1h working with minimal-to-average CPU usage (battery only, no A/C):

CPU 63°C (0x78)
APS 46°C (0x79)
PCM 41°C (0x7a)
GPU 67°C (0x7b)
BAT 42°C (0x7c)
BAT 39°C (0x7e)
BUS 44°C (0xc0)
PCI 52°C (0xc1)
PWR 54°C (0xc2)

Is this overheating?

It now occured to me that the spontaneous shut-downs started occurring after I installed a high-capacity, 9V battery. Could that have something to do with this?

I read on many of your posts that T60s have a very loud fan, but I can't hear mine at all?! Although, Thinkpad 43 Fan Control v0.18 says it's running at 3254 RPM.

What can be done if it's overheating? What if the fan is really running - what do you think can possibly need replacing? Is there a more powerful fan/heatsink that I can ask for?

Many thanks for your advice!

IMHO those temps aren't that high, but that is compared to my t60p. My GPU was getting up to 110 last week when I posted on here. I read the "T60 temperature thread" and they recommended blowing into the exhaust ports in the rear corner to lower temps. I did this and it lowered my temps 25-30 Degrees :o . I guess that it cleans all of the dust off of the cooling fins to allow for better heat transfer. I would recommend that. Your BAT temp is particularly high though in my opinion(it may be charging heavily right now). My fan runs at a constant 2500-300 RPM, but I can hardly hear it on my T6op. Here are my temps, while typing this.

CPU 50°C (0x78)
APS 38°C (0x79)
PCM 37°C (0x7a)
GPU 66°C (0x7b)
BAT 34°C (0x7c)
BAT 31°C (0x7e)
BUS 40°C (0xc0)
PCI 44°C (0xc1)
PWR 44°C (0xc2)

Check out the T60 temp thread, that will have any answers that you will need temp wise i think.

Good luck

blow some air in that system to clean out the fans and all that. My Core Duo 2.0Ghz runs at 44C so yeah those temps are hot.

Ok well i lied :) right now it's at 51 but normally it's not this hot...

CPU 51°C (0x78)
APS 38°C (0x79)
PCM 37°C (0x7a)
GPU 66°C (0x7b)
BAT 33°C (0x7c)
BAT 31°C (0x7e)
BUS 39°C (0xc0)
PCI 46°C (0xc1)
PWR 45°C (0xc2)

room temp went up cuz of the cold tonight, it's like 20F outside. COLD!

What power profile are you using? If your CPU is set to maximum speed, then the temperature will be rather high.

Thanks guys, and can I fix the fan and heatsink myself

Hi guys,

Thanks to all of you who replied. I also phoned around at several computer repair places, and most suggested that it's a fan/heatsink with dust problem, while one place suggested a motherboard component problem instead (what do you think?)

I have a few further questions:

- is TP Fan Control reliable, i.e. if it says my fan is running at 3200 RPM, is it really? I did open my T60, and saw the fan, but wasn't brave enough to run it without a keyb and touchpad. It did have some dust, but not too much.

- is it easy to replace the termal paste under the heatsink, and which paste should I use - is there a special one for a laptop? Are there any good guides explaining how to do this? I don't know what I should do - a computer repair shop will charge me something like £100 for this, which is 1/10 of the laptop cost - on the other hand, I don't know if it's worth messing about with it when I can break the whole thing?

-is there only one Heatsink and fan inside? The GPU also seemed rather hot, so will I need to find that too?

I am running on the maximum power profile, yes.
