In an effort to find out why some software I was trying to install wasn't working, I disabled all but Microsoft services on startup.
Big mistake--the machine wouldn't boot, hanging indefinitely with a "Checking the status of the security chip" box.
Fortunately, I was able to get the machine back up, by hitting F8 early in the boot process and selecting "Load last known good configuration." However, now every time I boot, a dialog box comes up complaining that "There was a problem connecting to a critical service. It is possible that anti-virus or firewall software is blocking the connection. Also, check to make sure that the TPM device driver is installed and enabled." Actually, the dialog box shows up three times: Once before I log in and twice again after I log in.
Can anyone tell me which service it was waiting for? Also, any suggestions for how to get rid of that silly message?
Frankly, I'd love to remove everything having to do with this security chip, as it doesn't seem to be helping me in any way.
