I was wondering why my hard drive had been filling up and when I investigated R&R it had been saving back ups to the C drive. Deleted the back ups and freed 30 Gig !

In R&R I only have the option to back up to the C drive, how do I back up to the Service partition ?

Service partition is not designed to store backups.

But that doesn't mean you can't backup to another partition/drive. Backing up to C: is foolhardy in my opinion. 50% of the time you are using the backup because C: is inaccessible and for most people that means inaccessible to the backup located in C:

The backups go to a hidden protected folder in C: called RRbackups. If you cannot boot to C: because of a corrupted system file or virus you are able to access the backups from the service partition after pressing the ThinkVantage button on boot.
It is obviously another matter if the hdd itself has a problem, then it doesn't matter which partition on the same physical hdd is used for backups, there could be problems.
When I use R&R I make a backup locally and then copy it to another hdd or dvd. Belt and Braces - safety in numbers.

I didn't know that but it makes sense, kudos to Lenovo/Thinkpad. I still won't use C: but we all have personal habits and philosophies. I like C: nekkid, I install a clean OS, install all my Apps from another drive from which they reside, then I tweak my apps and make a copy of the tweaked yet clean OS. As long as the App drive stays the same you don't even loose links and you can do a fully tweaked turnaround in under 5 minutes.

I also second backing everything up to another physical drive, with the costs of drives down and with USB transfers, not backing up externally is just plain lazy not to mention foolish

I use external usb drive. 250GB 8mb cache. I partioned mine in 2. One for backups and one for other saves. It just makes sense to backup your data to a seperate source in case you have a catistrofic hdd failure. I learned that the hard way. Make sure you have the latest rescue and recovery.
