Will a Drive from a T42 work in a T61? If it was bootable on the T42, will it still boot on the T61 (for purposes of removing files from it)?

No, both machines use different drive interfaces.

You will need either an Ultrabay hard drive adapter or a USB hard drive adapter to get your files. The USB is more versatile, it works on more computers than just your Thinkpad and it is cheaper.

What are the names of the two different interfaces?

er... SATA 1 (or 2) on T61's v. SATA 1 on the T60's v. PATA (IDE) on T4x's.

You could use the ultrabay hdd caddy from the T4x systems (which accepts only IDE drives) and insert that into the ultrabay slot on the T6x - this would allow you to continue using the IDE drive for storage, but you wouldn't be able to boot windows from that drive (linux will work from the hdd in the ultrabay caddy, but windows won't).

you would need to set the USB to bootable in the bios..
AND if all else works the OS would need the T61 drivers..

so, to answer the question i THINK you're asking yes and no..

OTH, if you mean can the T61 "see" the T42 drive in a USB external adapter, yes, you bet..!
