Major problem with T61 - Broken screen and bulged battery

#1 Post by billp117 » Wed Feb 20, 2008 8:44 pm

My sister-in-law has a fairly new T61. It died the other day and was sent to IBM repair today. The area around the battery is bulged up about 3/16", and the screen has several small cracks from the bulge. The computer will not run.

We checked with IBM and the battery is the recalled model number but not the recalled serial number. Apparently the guy on the phone did not seem like this was abnormal nor did he think it was dropped. This happened all by itself with the unit turned off and inside the padded sleeve which was inside a padded laptop bag.

Has anyone heard of this problem and how was it resolved? :(

IBM service said the motherboard burned up. Still no answer on replacing the cracked screen. Our concern is if the MB burned up...what other damage was done. We should hear back from IBM this week as to what they will do.

IBM service repaired the unit. They replaced the MB, screen, and other stuff under warranty. Should have it back today.

And now for the rest of the story...

IBM service "repaired" the T61. When it arrived back home the HD would not work (it was not shipped into repair as they said it should be ok. Also noticed the power connector was loose. After a call to IBM...my brother shipped it back. Overnight they repaired the power connector and replaced the HD. It was back the next day.

And yes...the bulge in the lid is 1/3 of what it used to be. IBM repair did a good job; but it did take a little coaching to get them to repair the screen.

All is well and our compliments to the IBM warranty program.
