well the media card reader is the one that says Media Card Slot.
The Express Card slot is for ExpressCards, if you don't know what that is then you probably wont need it but it's for new types of PCMCIA cards. The older ones (PCMCIA) goes into the PC Card slots and the new smaller types go into the Express Card Slot.
Smart card slot, well if you don't know what that is then yeah, you definitely wont need that. No need to explain that one at all.... it's not something you "might" need down the road either as you probably wont be taking your laptop to places that need that.. CIA, NASA, and others.
Get your Penryn and enjoy your laptop... something new is always around the corner....
