T61 - Problems with wireless adapter in certain settings

I have a T61 with the atheros 11a/b/g wireless adapter. It usually works fine, but at a lot of networks at my school I have trouble. Here's how it goes: I can connect to the network fine, but then it says "identifying" forever and it stays local only. I'm not sure about why it works on some university networks and not others. Any insight?

I resolved a similar symptom on a non-Lenovo centrino notebook by forcing the wifi adapter to stay in 'b' mode. That can be set in the properties for the network adapter in device manager. Is worth a try to see at least.

How do you do that? I can't figure it out. I tried to do it through the device manager.

With the Intel driver settings you should be able to go into the device manager (run "devmgmt.msc"), find the wireless adapter, right click and go to its properties, go to the "Advanced" tab, in the all-to-small listbox at the center of the dialog you should be able to find an entry of "Wireless Mode", select that and you can set what mode(s) the driver will attempt to use.

hope this helps,

Yes.
If you're running Vista the option will be called "2.4GHz" rather than "B".
