Me = Newbie. What do the different T61 model numbers mean?

Sorry for the newb question (I tried a few searches) but why are there different model numbers for each Thinkpad series? For example, T61's have many model numbers such as 8890, 8891, 8892, etc.
What differentiates the different model numbers?
I just received one and it has a model number of 8891CTO. I would guess that the CTO would stand for Configure To Order???

CTO is configure to order and the different model numbers relate to just different options. while i don't know the specific differences between all of those sometimes it's stuff like warranty or bluetooth standard or optional or other things. Who knows exactly but the numbers are probably mostly for internal use
Normally you could just go on the website and type in the model number to get the specifications as it was shipped from the company but with the CTO models you can't really get that info anymore. Generally tho, 8899 or whatever will come with X, Y, and Z while the other might come with X, Y, Z and something other stuff.

What's the lighted icon next to the hard drive light, the one that looks like a circled "Z"?

Wouldn't the big bright thing called "THE screen" give us the same indication that the computer is on and ready to use?
Now I'm curious about the history on why this specific light was added.

It's totally possible to blank the LCD with the laptop still powered on...
i.e. use a blank screen screensaver or just set the display off timeout to something other than 'never' or--even better--just use the 'power off display' option in the ThinkVantage Productivity Center menu.

You could just press Fn-F3 to blank the screen on demand!
