T60p 2007 motherboard vs. T60p 2623 motherboard?

Hey all,

I have done the Vista scoring on two 2623 systems, and on one 2007, and one 2008 system. It is very consistent. The WEI scores are always a 1-3 tenths of a point higher on the 2623 systems than on the older 2007/2008 systems. Hmm...Well, it would make sense from the standpoint that the 2623's (at least the ones I've tested) have been newer by about 3/4 year. They all had the same CPU and GPU when I tested them. Is there something they improved on the newer ones? Another thing that would speak for my theory is the paper insert I got for my 2007 model which stated that "certain older 2007 systems will have problems activating Vista" due to some issue. Sure enough, I had to get another key from Microsoft, because it would not activate, even though I upgraded the BIOS and everything.

Apparently there is some kind of minor difference in the system boards during the time the T60p's were manufactured. What do you guys think???

i'm not sure what would cause the difference in WEI numbers but i do know that you'll never be able to tell the difference in performance when using each machine.

As far as I know no 2623 machine ever came with Vista. They were done before Vista came out. There were a few here that were made in April of last year but as far as I know they were not available with Vista. There is a BIOS setting that the Vista install looks for to activate and the 2623 machines will not have it. There were some 2007 machines that you could buy with Vista.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Brad: Interesting. Then, maybe it's the same thing with the 2623's, as my 2007 had the issue, not the 2623. Maybe both. Who knows.

erik: I figured that much. I just was wondering if there were ANY minor improvements made in the "later versions" of the T60p system boards vs. the early ones?

I was only asking because the 2623 have the Vista-capable stickers on its machines. So is there maybe ANY, TINY(?) improvement, maybe like a minor issue fixed on the newer mobo, albeit with the same chipset??

Another reason as to why I'm asking is because my 2nd T60p has the Atheros N card built in. It's a 2623-DDU. Unlike myself, a very calm buddy of mine who I bought this from, upgraded the Intel 3945ABG card to the Atheros a/b/g/n card, as well as 4GB of RAM, and a T7400. So I'd kill two birds with one stone if I swapped the motherboards out, and I wouldn't have to install my own N card, and get any 2623 benefits (or lack thereof

), and I could just swap the T7400 for my T7600, and put the T7400 onto the 2007 mobo.

Tell me good news guys! I beg of you.

chances are the 2623 is a newer revision planar and very well might have a minor, insignificant, barely-measurable tweak done to it which eeks out a 0.00005% difference in performance. i wouldn't bother swapping processors because of the difference though.

Sorry Brad, but this is not entirely correct.

The OEM versions of Vista simply look for an OEM BIOS (Lenovo, Dell, HP, ASUS, etc.). There is no particular flag that must be set for Vista to find this.

How do I know? I have an OEM Lenovo copy of Vista and it runs just fine on my T60p based on the above board. It has never asked to be activated once.

Just another data point. My 2623-D7U shipped with XP but I got the free Vista Business upgrade. I don't remember if it activated or not, but there was certainly no issue requiring any service call.

I tried the Vista Business OEM Lenovo copy on a 2007-66U and did not have your success. After 30 days the install went kaput.
