Vista / XP using Thinkpad XP CD on a partition

#1 Post by berlin » Tue Mar 04, 2008 1:41 pm

I have vista on partition C: and now I want to install XP on partition D: but not using the MS cd but the Thinkpad XP recovery cds (5 cds).

Are these bootable to begin with? SOmehow I can't make CD 1 boot from the drive.

XP doesn't like being installed on anything else but the primary active drive (i.e. c:\ ).

Second, you cannot "install windows" from a set of recovery CDs. The set formats the hard drive and puts an image of a working OS on that drive, so you'd definitely lose any and all info/OS currently residing on the drive.

There are ways of installing and running both Vista and XP on the same drive (called dual-booting) and you should find plenty of instructions on how to do this by googling "dual boot XP Vista". Issue here is that you will need full install disks of both Vista and XP to do this.
