8 GB of RAM supported by T61s?

#1 Post by BrianR » Tue Mar 04, 2008 3:43 pm

So, it's finally happened:

DELL's Precision M6300 (64bit) can be configured with 8 GB of RAM.

"8.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS [add $1,299]"

Crucial's not showing 8 GB yet for sale. Anyone know anything for ThinkPads and whether or not all/any existing T's based on Santa Rosa or newer will support it?

Santa Rosa platforms can support 8GB of RAM. The only problem with that is there weren't any 4GB sticks to buy. They aren't available anywhere so sure someone would be using it if they could find them.

Dell seem to have gotten some but that's probably because of how big of a company they are. They probably got the first batch out.

What would you use 8GB of RAM for on a laptop?
Lenovo ThinkPad X220
i5-2410M | 8GB RAM | 240GB Crucial M500 | IPS 720P | BT 3.0 | Intel 1000 | Windows 8.1
yes, the 9mm SSD fits in the X220

Past ThinkPads: X300, T400, X61s, T41, X31, A21m, T23 (x2)

Entire test domains for presenting complext IT environements.

I have a VM that runs x64 Windows and needs 2 GB of RAM to get loaded properly.

Now I often run with two machines and run:
* Domain Controller
* Database
* E-mail
* Web
* Client machines

etc.

That's what. :D

just to make sure, the dell m6300, which is a 17" sized machine, does not employ regular desktop sized dimms?

I sometimes thought that, when I opened it, in my t61p there could be space arranged to accommodate desktop size dimms. for example the currently used so-dimms could be higher and still fit into the t61p. smart design many allow to fit in regular dimms.

but as soon as the 8gb so-simms are available I get them, too. having a number of VMs.

They employ special SO-DIMMs PC-5300. The maximum for the chipset for T61 is 4 GB SO_DIMM for a total of 8 GB.

This 8GB support would be a boon for those of us running VMware labs on our thinkpads (I do).
