Fn+Fx hotkeys problem

#1 Post by DaviuS » Mon Mar 10, 2008 4:12 am

Hello,

I've got a strange problem with the Fn+fx hotkeys on my T61. Everything was working fine since I've updated power management software (with SU).

The only hotkey witch works is the Fn+F5 key, but it only trigger the radio control panel... no longer AC profile chooser.

I tried to reinstall power management software and the hotkey utility, without result...

I've also looked in C:\Program Files\Lenovo\HOTKEY, and everything looks fine... the TpFnF5.exe program display the AC profiles.

any ideas ?

Hi,

I have a very similar problem on T60.

In my case the only Fn combinations which work are:

Fn + light
Fn + NumLK
Fn + Break

ThinkVantage button, volume, brightness, all others do NOT work at all.

What is also common with your case that everything was fine till today's morning, when Windows Update downloaded and installed just ONE Windows Patch. I already uninstalled this patch, but very unfortunately I did not write down it's number and I don't know how to check it...

Another symptoms I noticed:

1. Hibernation does not work any more, I am getting error that driver of "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller" does not allow to hibernate.

I applied hibernation related patch from MS (the one about problem with hibernation on PCs with 1 GB of memory), but this is not an issue here.

Patches I applied:

WindowsXP-KB909095-x86-ENU.exe
Q330909_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exe
Q331958_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exe

2. Also there is something wrong with ThinkPad Power Management. I noticed in Services that ThinkPad PM did not complete to start, it is in 'starting' state.

I tried to apply latest ThinkPad PM driver ( 1.44 ) but it does not change things a bit.

3. If I go to the Device Manager I am having yellow exclamation mark on the device "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller".

I have a feeling that we are facing a new issue... Unfortunately, I have no idea how to fix it.

And my note to all who are going to update their systems: do a backup before! If this is a new issue - you may hit it. Be careful.

And: any ideas about this one?

It's gone!

I don't know why, but the problem is gone... What I was doing:

- I was trying to uninstall "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller" driver, I rebooted system, did not help, still the same situation.

- I was willing to stop ThinkPad PM service, but all buttons were greyed out. So I killed process ibmpmsvc.exe, tried to run ThinkPad PM service - it stucked on the same place - service was 'starting' and that's it.

- Then I was trying to use WiFi network and I noticed WiFi is gone! I switched off all wireless devices, switched back on - nothing has changed, devices did not power on!

- I tried to run C:\Program Files\Lenovo\HOTKEY\TpFnF5.exe, it did start, but I could see profiles only, no tab with WiFi devices.

- Then I did reboot system once again and... screen has changed resolution to the 640x480, Windows had to install Bluetooth (?!) and all is OK for now... Fn keys do work, all devices are OK, ThinkPad PM OK, hibernation OK.

I completely do not understand what has happened...

Regards.

Hi z/svc,

I've done a Windows Update too, but the only installed package was the new NVidia Quadro driver.

The Thinkpad PM service is well started on my system and all the associated function (battery monitor, sleep...) works fine.

The hotkey dll seems to be configured in registry :

Code: Select all

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\tphotkey]
"DllName"="C:\\Program Files\\Lenovo\\HOTKEY\\tphklock.dll"
Why I really don't understand is the registry activity when I trigger a Fn+fx key :

Code: Select all

Process Name PID Operation Path Result Detail"
ibmpmsvc.exe 1796 RegOpenKey HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\IBMPMSVC\Parameters\Notification SUCCESS Desired Access: All Access"

Why does ibmpmsvc.exe is launched when I press any hotkey ????
In anyway, the winlogon seems to know the exe I want to launch (C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\UltraNav Utility\UNAVOSD.EXE), witch is defined in ("HKLM\SOFTWARE\IBM\TPHOTKEY\Class\01\08\File"), but nothing happen...

Anyone having the same issue ?

I finally solved the hotkey problem by reinstalling an old version of Hotkey Manager (IBM ThinkPad Hotkey Features v1.23.0601) 7avu12ww.exe.

It seems that the version that has been installed by SU was for Vista... strange...

Hotkeys works but now TPONSCR.exe crash when I play with the volume buttons...

Ideas ?

I have the same problem with my T60 widescreen running XP Professional.

Three days ago I used system update and now the only FN + FX keys that work are FN + F5 (access connections) and FN + F12 (hibernation) and FN + F4 (standby).

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of hotkeys. I've checked my registry and verified that the right programs are associated with the class keys assigned to each Hotkey function. But still, no hotkey functionality.

How do I get older versions of Hotkeys to install over the newer one?

You can download the old drivers at :
http://www.opendrivers.com/freedownload ... nload.html
(no registration required), select the 2nd mirror, the first one (from ibm) is down. Tell me if you can't download the file and I'll drop it somewhere.

First delete the actual drivers,
REBOOT,
and install the new ones (the .EXE file will only extract the installation files, you need to run SETUP.EXE from C:\DRIVERS\WIN\HOTKEY).

Tell me if it works and if you have the same problem with the volume keys (witch makes TPONSCR.exe crash).

Older version of Hotkeys driver hasn't made a difference.

I just tried pressing all my FN+FX key combinations.

F4 (sleep), F5 (Access Connections), F7 (Monitor toggle), and F12 (Hibernate) all work.

F2 (Lock), F3 (Power Manager), F8 (Ultranav), and F9 (EasyEject) do not work.

Lenovo software support were baffled because there is no loss of functionality in any other aspect of the notebook unit, in terms of keyboard usage, OS stability, or any Lenovo-specific program.

This is just the latest incident unfortunately in a long line of glitches, errors, and problems with my T60 dating to December 2006. Switching my company's fleet of notebooks to the Thinkpad T60/T61 series from another PC manufacturer and product line was a huge mistake for my firm in terms of productivity loss and overall satisfaction.

Reinstall hotkey drivers, ACPI Power Management drivers, display drivers, UltraNav utility, EasyEject and Power Manager manually from lenovo.

I'm still having problem with the $µ0é#@! thinkpads softwares...

The Fn+F5 don't work with hotkey driver 5.10.02
Solution : I install 3.33.0 hotkey driver :

- The Fn+F5 come back to life
- But when I press the volume keys, TPONSCR.EXE process crash...

Solution : I uninstall the 3.33, reinstall the 5.10.02

- The volume keys works,
- but the Fn+F5 hotkey don't...

It seems that I have to choose between the two functionalities... (I'm bored).

The volume keys don't works, but the brightness and the light-control keys works... Please Lenovo, stop programming with your feets...

If someone got an idea, he's welcome...

I tried to reinstall all drivers, with the order you specified... no change...

I really don't want to reinstall all the system, I have to much softwares and configuration made on it... So I think I'll have to do without the incrustation function...
